Audi A2

AUA 1.4L MPI 75 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2000–2005
– Be Careful
Engine AUA – Be Careful 1,840–7,650 €

1.4-litre MPI with 75 hp β€” robust naturally aspirated engine from the VAG parts bin. Known weakness: aluminium cylinder head can develop bore scoring; if damaged, the head must be fully replaced. Isolated cases of elevated oil consumption on early models, largely resolved from 2004.

Fun Factor? Decent

Solid everyday engine β€” gets the job done

75 hp 1.4L for daily use. Watch the known weak points. Manual gearbox is pleasantly light.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Camshaft wear and bearing damage

The camshafts and bearing journals of the 1.4 AUA can wear when oil is low or degraded. Metal swarf in the oil is a warning sign. In advanced cases a cylinder head replacement is needed.

Symptoms: Grinding noise during camshaft movement, metal particles visible in oil on a magnet, heavy knocking/grinding sound

500–1,800 € from 200,000 km
!! Hydraulic lifter and roller rocker arm wear

On the 1.4 AUA, hydraulic lifters and roller rocker arms wear at high mileage. The lifters can no longer build sufficient pressure and valve clearance is no longer compensated. Replacement requires timing belt removal.

Symptoms: Clattering noise on cold start and warm engine, rough idle, jerking

200–500 € from 150,000 km
!! Recurring misfires on cylinder 2

Cylinder 2 on the AUA engine in particular tends to misfires that occur after warm-up. Defective hydraulic lifters or leaking valves may be the cause. Fault code P0302.

Symptoms: Fault code P0302 (misfire cylinder 2), jerking after warm-up, engine warning light

50–600 € from 150,000 km
!! Electronic throttle body malfunction

The electronic throttle body on the 1.4 MPI AUA is prone to faults: fault code P2101 and limp mode. Cleaning with acetone provides a temporary fix. Connector pin corrosion is the common cause.

Symptoms: EPC and engine warning light, limp mode, vehicle not responding to throttle pedal

100–400 € from 100,000 km
! Leaking camshaft and crankshaft shaft seals

The shaft seals on the camshaft and crankshaft of the 1.4 AUA tend to develop oil leaks at higher mileage. Oil spots after parking are typical; engine appears oily externally.

Symptoms: Oil spots under the parked vehicle, engine oily externally, slightly falling oil level

80–250 € from 150,000 km
! MAF sensor failure

The MAF sensor on the 1.4 MPI AUA fails regularly and triggers the engine warning light. Symptoms are typical of a dirty or failed sensor. It is a cheap part β€” try cleaning with carb cleaner first.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, rough running, increased fuel consumption, lack of power

80–250 € from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Suspension Sheet-Metal Control Arms Rusting from Inside

Later sheet-metal control arms (instead of cast construction) rust from the inside out and can fracture. Safety-critical issue.

200–600 € from 150,000 km
!! Body OpenSky Panoramic Roof Leaking

The optional OpenSky glass sunroof frequently develops leaks. Seals age and drain channels clog, allowing water into the interior.

200–1,500 € from 100,000 km
!! HVAC Heater Flap Actuator Failure

Potentiometer wear in heater flap actuator motors leads to faulty temperature control.

100–300 € from 120,000 km
!! Body Water Ingress into Boot

Rubber grommets on the wiring harness and rear window seals allow water into the boot. Battery and control units at risk.

50–300 € from 120,000 km
!! Electronics Comfort Control Unit Failure

Early comfort control units lose key programming or fail completely. Replacement requires coding.

150–500 € from 100,000 km
! Suspension Stabiliser Bushings Worn

Plastic stabiliser bushings crumble and drop links wear out. Typical age-related wear, inexpensive to repair.

80–250 € from 100,000 km
! Body Headlight Plastic Lenses Hazing

Plastic headlight lenses yellow due to UV exposure. Early two-piece headlights are also prone to moisture ingress.

50–400 € from 120,000 km
