Audi RS7 C8(4K) — Problems & Common Faults

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

★★★★★
3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 1 engine variants · How we rate

The Audi RS7 C8 (2019–present) — technically identical to RS6 C8, Sportback body. Same BSG 48V issue: 4N0=risk, 4N1=revised. Rarer than RS6. Buy it for the shape.

2026 market: 2020–2022 from $82,500–104,500. Insider pick: RS7 with BSG 4N1 proof.

Engine Overview

The Audi RS7 C8 is available with one engine variant at 600 hp.

RS7 · Petrol Mild-Hybrid· 600 PS
2019 2024

The third-generation EA825: technically identical at its core to the Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne Turbo. 600 PS, cylinder deactivation (4 of 8 at part load), 48V mild hybrid with belt starter-generator, rear-wheel steering. This makes this C8 flagship surprisingly agile despite weighing over 2.1 tonnes. In stock form throttle response is slightly duller than in the C7 — ECU/TCU mapping is often updated. Alternator fails unexpectedly early under high-performance use: 30,000–50,000 km lifespan documented on some examples. Engine itself has no characteristic weaknesses under normal use.

  • !! Turbo Oil Strainer Clogged — Bearing Starvation from 80,000 km

Excessively fine-mesh oil strainer in the turbo oil supply clogs with carbon deposits. Result: turbo bearing starvation, turbo damage up to engine failure. Recall 21H7 (April 2022) affects production June 2012–March 2017.

Symptoms: Power loss, misfires, turbo whistling, oil burning
    800–11,000 $
  • !! Timing Chain Elongated — Camshaft Synchronisation from 175,000 km

From around 150,000–200,000 km, timing chains can stretch or guide rails break. Camshaft-to-crankshaft synchronisation fault codes appear. Without repair, severe engine damage follows.

Symptoms: Rattling noise on cold start, rough idle, engine check light, camshaft fault codes
    2,500–6,000 $
  • !! Turbo Oil Drain Lines Coked — Shaft Seal Failure from 150,000 km

Hot-V mounted turbos tend to oil carbon buildup in drain lines when frequently shut down after full-load without cooldown time. Coking leads to turbo oil loss and bearing damage without immediate symptoms.

Symptoms: Blue smoke after parking, turbo bearing whine at high rpm, slowly increasing oil consumption, eventually power loss
    2,000–10,000 $

Vehicle Weaknesses

WeaknessCost
✖48 V Mild Hybrid: Belt Starter-Generator Failure with Electrical Collapse

The belt starter-generator in the RS7 C8's 48 V system fails between 20,000 and 70,000 km. Failure collapses the entire 12 V supply. Repair costs around €6,000.

Symptoms: Sudden 'Electrical System Fault' warning, followed by loss of steering assistance, brake boost and lighting, vehicle comes to a standstill
from 45,000 km
High
!Air suspension: ride height sensor fault

On the S7 4K, defective ride height sensors in the air suspension are reported, causing system fault messages. Usually individual sensors that need replacing.

Symptoms: 'Air suspension system fault', car does not regulate ride height correctly, level error on start-up
from 60,000 km
Medium
!48V mild-hybrid system fault

The 48V mild-hybrid system with belt-driven starter-generator is a potential weak point in the S7 4K. Audi granted a 7-year extended warranty on the BSG, which is telling.

Symptoms: 'Electrical system fault' message, battery warning, no regenerative braking or coasting mode
from 80,000 km
High
●MIB3 Infotainment and Virtual Cockpit: Crashes and Reboots

The MIB3 system in the RS7 C8 is prone to spontaneous reboots and frozen UI. Software updates often only provide a temporary fix.

Symptoms: Black screen while driving, MMI rebooting, no camera image when reversing, navigation unresponsive
from 40,000 km
High
●OLED Tail Lights: Segment Failure and Warning Messages

The RS7 C8's OLED tail lights are a signature design element and a known weak point: individual OLED segments fail. Replacing one rear light costs €2,000–4,500.

Symptoms: Visibly dark segments in the tail lights, 'Lighting Fault' warning, MOT-relevant failure if a brake light segment is out
from 50,000 km
High
●MMI and driver assistance system faults

On the S7 4K sporadic fault messages from driver assistance systems, gearbox faults and drivetrain warnings occur, particularly at speeds above 180 km/h. Software updates resolve many issues.

Symptoms: Warning messages at high speeds, dashboard faults disappear on their own, occasional system crashes
