This electric drive unit comes from the first generation of the manufacturer's dedicated EV platform and shares its front and rear motor design with the other drive units in this range. The best-documented weak point is a mechanical face seal meant to separate the coolant circuit from the stator chamber, which does not reliably withstand thermal cycling or extended periods of standstill. Affected vehicles typically show a slow, unannounced coolant loss at first, followed by insulation faults and a grinding or howling running noise resembling a damaged wheel bearing. A catch reservoir fitted to the unit only monitors part of the sealing planes and therefore provides no reliable early warning. A software defect in the drive control unit on a batch of early production vehicles could also trigger a complete loss of drive and was addressed through a recall with a control-unit software update. An insulation test and a check of the coolant level are worthwhile before purchase, since uninsured failures can become expensive.

  • !! Recall: Moisture Ingress into HV Battery (Fire Risk)

A defective cable seal allows moisture to enter the HV battery, which can cause short circuits and vehicle fires. First recall 2019 with approx. 7,000 vehicles, followed by further recall 2022/2023.

Symptoms: Usually no prior warning. Possible range reduction or power loss may precede a more serious event.

  • !! Recall: Voltage Losses in Battery Cell Modules (LG E61V)

Voltage losses in LG E61V battery cell modules can lead to thermal overload and vehicle fire. Affects MY 03/2018–03/2022, 42,668 vehicles worldwide, 1,453 in Germany. Recall code 93U9/93V2.

Symptoms: Reduced range and power loss as early warning signs. Audi recommends charge limit of 80%.

  • !! MMI Crashes, Blue Screen and System Failures from 25,000 km

The MMI system shows frequent crashes with blue screen, especially during longer journeys. One owner reported 27 workshop visits in 2.5 years. Navigation failures and faulty surround cameras are common.

Symptoms: MMI blue screen while driving, nav drops out, voice recognition unresponsive, surround cameras showing wrong image.

This drive unit is the best-selling power level of this range and is correspondingly well represented in documented failure cases. The front and rear motors share the same design as the other drive units on the platform, including the well-known face-seal weak point between the coolant circuit and the stator chamber. Documented cases exist where, after somewhere between a few tens of thousands and well over a hundred thousand kilometres, coolant entered the motor - unnoticed at first, later accompanied by insulation faults and a singing or howling running noise under load and during regenerative braking. The catch reservoir on the rear motor only captures part of possible leaks, while the front motor has no comparable monitoring at all. There is also a recall for faulty drive software on early production vehicles, which in the worst case led to a complete loss of power and was fixed via an update. An insulation check is worthwhile before purchase, especially at higher mileage.

  • !! Recall: Voltage Losses in Battery Cell Modules

As an e-tron S sharing the GE platform, this model shares the battery issue (LG E61V) with the standard e-tron. Recall 93U9/93V2 affects MY 2018–2022, 42,668 vehicles worldwide.

Symptoms: Reduced range and occasional power loss as early warning signs. Audi recommendation: charge limit 80%.
    0–0 $
  • !! Recall: Brake Servo Defective

Recall action for a defective brake servo on the Audi e-tron, which also affects the e-tron S. Cause and exact numbers documented per KBA notification.

Symptoms: Increased effort required to brake, longer stopping distances, warning light on dashboard.
    0–0 $
  • !! Coolant Ingress into Rear Motor (Seal Failure) from 60,000 km

The rear motor of the e-tron (Audi-EM-300) has a known series defect: a seal fails and allows coolant to enter the electric motor. Repair costs 7,000–10,000 EUR. Audi covered costs in some cases as goodwill.

Symptoms: Rear motor warning, sudden loss of all-wheel drive, vehicle breaks down. Coolant level drops.

This version adds a second, independent motor at the rear axle to the platform's usual front/rear architecture, allowing torque to be delivered to each rear wheel individually without a mechanical differential. All motors are, by design, from the same family as the other drive units on this platform and share their well-known weak point: a mechanical face seal meant to separate coolant from the stator chamber, which can become leaky under thermal cycling and long periods of standstill. Symptoms range from a slow coolant loss through insulation faults to a grinding or howling running noise. Monitoring via the catch reservoir is incomplete, so an unremarkable reservoir is no guarantee of a healthy motor. With the additional rear-axle unit, the risk is effectively doubled, since two sealing planes rather than one are in service at the rear axle. An insulation test before purchase is recommended.

  • !! Recall: Voltage Losses in Battery Cell Modules

The three-motor S variant (370 kW) uses the same GE-platform battery. LG E61V cell modules can develop voltage losses and be thermally overloaded. Recall 93U9/93V2 for MY 2018–2022.

Symptoms: Range reduction and power drop as early warning signs. In extreme cases fire risk without prior warning.
    0–0 $
  • !! Coolant leak — front motor (e-tron drive) from 70,000 km

The front motor of the e-tron can also be affected by coolant leaks caused by seal failure. Individual cases are known; the rear motor is more commonly affected. Repair costs are comparably expensive.

Symptoms: Coolant level drops, drivetrain warning, power reduction, vehicle enters limp mode.
    7,000–12,000 $
  • !! MMI System Crashes and Infotainment Faults from 25,000 km

Identical MMI platform to all GE e-tron models. Blue screens and infotainment freezing are known especially on longer trips. Workshop visits only resolve the problem temporarily.

Symptoms: MMI display black or frozen, reversing camera failure, navigation dropout, voice control without function.
