Alfa Romeo 1.5 MHEV
The 1.5-litre mild hybrid in the Tonale — 130–160 hp with a 48V belt starter-generator and 15 kW electric boost. The small turbocharged petrol engine gets electric assistance at low speeds, and the 7-speed DCT shifts acceptably quickly. Not an emotional Alfa engine, but efficient and sufficiently powered for the compact SUV.
Base Tonale: design beats dynamics
130 hp is adequate for a compact SUV, but not exciting. The Tonale wins with good looks and comfort — driving fun is not the main point here.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The timing chain on the 2.2 JTS GM engine typically stretches from 78,000–84,000 km and triggers fault code P0016 (camshaft phase position). Chains rarely snap but can cause engine damage by jumping. Repair costs are €1,200–2,500.
Symptoms: Engine warning light P0016, sporadic rattling on cold start, reduced power under load
The 15 kW belt-starter-generator (BSG) on the 1.5 MHEV Tonale can fail due to electronic faults or overheating. A typical symptom is the message 'Hybrid system fault' and deactivation of mild hybrid operation. Early models (2022–2023) show higher fault rates.
Symptoms: Hybrid system fault warning, stop/start function disabled, E-mode unavailable, increased fuel consumption
The 1.5-litre turbo on the Tonale MHEV shows increased bearing wear on early models. The timing chain recall (replacement at 37,000 and 55,000 miles) is linked to the turbo oil circuit. Regular oil changes to approved specifications are critical for turbo longevity.
Symptoms: Whistling or rattling turbo noises, oil loss in the turbo area, power loss, bluish smoke on cold start
The 48V mild hybrid system on the Tonale 1.5 MHEV is relatively new (from 2022). Long-term experience is still lacking. In the event of battery failure, costs can be significant.
Symptoms: Warning on the display, increased fuel consumption when hybrid assist fails
The alternator on the 2.2 JTS regulates voltage below 13.8 V with age, no longer fully charging the battery. Various faults (ABS, sensors) appear as a result; a corroded earth contact is often a contributing factor.
Symptoms: ABS warning at start, battery discharge after a few years, sporadic sensor faults
The belt tensioner for the BSG belt on the 1.5 MHEV Tonale wears earlier than conventional tensioners because it operates under the higher torques of the starter-generator. Belt whine and uneven belt wear are typical early indicators.
Symptoms: Squealing or whistling belt noise on start or acceleration, uneven belt wear, BSG fault messages
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Driver assistance sensors (AFS, front camera) fail in rain, sunlight and fog. A software update exists for the rain issue but only reduces the frequency. Park sensors are not recognised by the system and require a workshop visit.
After visiting a car wash, water enters at the rear window seals in the corners. Initial repair attempts prove unsuccessful. Confirmed repeatedly in forums. Possible consequence: moisture damage to cabin and electronics.
The Tonale's 6-speed automatic shifts too slowly and sometimes at the wrong time in urban and commuter driving. Torque distribution is not cleanly managed, resulting in power interruptions. In normal driving more annoying than critical.
The electric tailgate repeatedly shows the fault 'Have electric tailgate serviced', even though the tailgate operates normally. Multiple workshop visits do not resolve the issue permanently. Software fault suspected.
The Tonale's automatic climate control does not sufficiently dry the interior air in cold damp conditions. Windows fog up quickly despite auto mode. Additionally, water ingress occurs at the rear window seals after car washing.
The Tonale's strut top mounts tend to creak and squeak, especially during slow manoeuvring. Brake pads can seize after standstill periods, particularly on the plug-in hybrid where braking is less frequent. Typical cost for strut mounts: €200–400 per axle.
On the Tonale (especially the plug-in hybrid) brake calipers can seize after extended standstill because the braking system is used less frequently. Typical of hybrid vehicles. Caliper replacement: €430–690 per axle, pads: €170–380.
The Tonale's front camera malfunctions in rain, fog and sunlight. The automatic emergency braking system and lane keep assist fail simultaneously. Workshop diagnosis often inconclusive as the fault occurs sporadically. Software update does not always resolve it.
