Alfa Romeo 1.3 PHEV
The plug-in hybrid in the Tonale combines a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor on the rear axle β together 275 hp of system output and Q4 all-wheel drive without a mechanical connection. Up to 60 km on electric power alone, after which the 1.3 turbo works as the combustion engine. The combustion engine does not sound like an Alfa, but the electric rear axle makes the Tonale surprisingly agile in the dry. Battery capacity at 15.5 kWh is adequate for daily use, charging limited to 7.4 kW.
PHEV 190hp: Built for Pragmatists
190 hp PHEV enables electric commuting and sufficient performance. The driving experience is pleasant but uneventful β an Alfa for the head, less for the heart.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The timing chain of the 1.3 Firefly base engine can stretch prematurely and trigger an engine warning light code. Reports are accumulating in Italy; Alfa has initiated a quiet service campaign but no formal recall.
Symptoms: Engine warning light, camshaft timing error, occasional rattling on cold start
The Tonale PHEV is very new (from 2023). Long-term data on battery degradation and engine durability are not yet available. High costs are to be expected for battery replacement.
Symptoms: Declining electric range, increased fuel consumption
Multiple control units and the emergency call system of the Tonale PHEV do not fully shut down after switching off, draining the 12V battery within days. Affected vehicles cannot be started after extended parking.
Symptoms: Vehicle will not start after a few days on standby, switch panel shows a cascade of warning lights, roadside assistance required
The front camera supplies incorrect data to the driver assistance control units under certain lighting and weather conditions. In one documented case this triggered a cascaded system failure with ABS, steering and gearbox faults.
Symptoms: Lane-keeping system permanently unavailable, ADAS warning tones, rarely: complete system failure with cascade of warning lights
The high-voltage system of the Tonale PHEV requires its own cooling circuit for the battery and electric motor. Early models showed defects in the 48V battery due to faulty pressure valves that allowed water ingress. Battery failure after only a few thousand kilometres has been documented.
Symptoms: Complete failure of the hybrid drivetrain, 7V battery display after brief standstill, vehicle does not start or runs on combustion engine only
The electric motor of the Tonale PHEV can develop unusual humming or rattling noises due to bearing wear. Early models (2022/2023) showed increased quality issues in the hybrid drivetrain. Dealers have in several cases replaced the complete hybrid unit.
Symptoms: Humming or rattling from the drivetrain during electric-only operation or when switching between electric and combustion mode
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Driver assistance sensors (AFS, front camera) fail in rain, sunlight and fog. A software update exists for the rain issue but only reduces the frequency. Park sensors are not recognised by the system and require a workshop visit.
After visiting a car wash, water enters at the rear window seals in the corners. Initial repair attempts prove unsuccessful. Confirmed repeatedly in forums. Possible consequence: moisture damage to cabin and electronics.
The Tonale's 6-speed automatic shifts too slowly and sometimes at the wrong time in urban and commuter driving. Torque distribution is not cleanly managed, resulting in power interruptions. In normal driving more annoying than critical.
The electric tailgate repeatedly shows the fault 'Have electric tailgate serviced', even though the tailgate operates normally. Multiple workshop visits do not resolve the issue permanently. Software fault suspected.
The Tonale's automatic climate control does not sufficiently dry the interior air in cold damp conditions. Windows fog up quickly despite auto mode. Additionally, water ingress occurs at the rear window seals after car washing.
The Tonale's strut top mounts tend to creak and squeak, especially during slow manoeuvring. Brake pads can seize after standstill periods, particularly on the plug-in hybrid where braking is less frequent. Typical cost for strut mounts: β¬200β400 per axle.
On the Tonale (especially the plug-in hybrid) brake calipers can seize after extended standstill because the braking system is used less frequently. Typical of hybrid vehicles. Caliper replacement: β¬430β690 per axle, pads: β¬170β380.
The Tonale's front camera malfunctions in rain, fog and sunlight. The automatic emergency braking system and lane keep assist fail simultaneously. Workshop diagnosis often inconclusive as the fault occurs sporadically. Software update does not always resolve it.
