Alfa Romeo 1.6 JTDm
The 1.6-litre JTDM from Fiat/Multijet is the volume diesel for the MiTo and Giulietta — 105–120 hp, frugal (4.5–5.5 l/100 km), sufficiently torquey for daily use. Well matched to the MiTo, slightly undersized in the heavier Giulietta. Common rail diesel technology with the usual concerns: DPF regeneration on short-trip use, injector wear at high mileage.
Compact All-Rounder with Diesel
With 120 hp and a keen chassis the Giulietta offers solid driving fun even as a diesel. No heart-in-mouth moment, but a solid base with genuine Alfa flair.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Based on 50 reports: gearbox bearings failing partially at 80,000 km. M32 also used for diesel MiTo without reinforcement. Humming noises and total failure if repair is delayed.
Symptoms: Humming in 5th/6th gear, gear lever wanders under load, shift precision deteriorates.
From fiches-auto.fr: documented turbocharger failures, including turbo failure at 90,000 km. Head gasket damage as collateral damage is possible.
Symptoms: Sudden power loss, whistling sound, blue exhaust smoke, oil in the intake line.
Deposits from unsuitable or old oil can block the UniAir unit solenoid. If blocked in the closed position, the intake valve no longer opens; the affected cylinder does not fire.
Symptoms: Misfire on individual cylinders, three-cylinder running, engine warning light with solenoid fault code
EGR valve and throttle body coke up heavily. Fault code P0487/P0490 with a coked EGR housing. Coolant leak at the EGR housing is also documented.
Symptoms: Power loss below 2,000 rpm, rough running, exhaust smoke in urban traffic, limp mode possible.
DPF does not fully regenerate with short-trip driving. The 1.6 JTDm with 120 hp produces more soot than the 1.3. The differential pressure sensor wears concurrently.
Symptoms: Power loss, limp mode, engine warning light DPF full, elevated oil level from fuel dilution.
The MultiAir unit oil micro-filter (behind the timing belt cover) becomes blocked with infrequent oil changes or the wrong oil. This causes insufficient hydraulic pressure in the valve control unit, resulting in misfires.
Symptoms: Three-cylinder running, sporadic engine warning light, rough running especially when cold
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The rear sills on the Giulietta 940 rust concealed under the wheel arch transition. Moisture and dirt accumulate behind the plastic wheel arch liners. Swedish tests rated corrosion protection at only 2/5 points. Cavity wax treatment at purchase is recommended.
Control arms and anti-roll bar drop links on the Giulietta front axle are due at around 80,000 km. At the same time, engine mounts often fail (especially the right-hand side), causing vibrations and rough TCT gear changes. Dampers can be worn by 75,000 km.
The wiring harness in the tailgate hinge breaks from repeated opening and closing at around 70,000 km. Heated rear window, tailgate release and rear lights can fail. An inexpensive repair by re-terminating the cables is possible.
Inner and outer door handles on the Giulietta break from material fatigue. A well-known issue. Replacement parts are available cheaply. The fuel flap mechanism also fails from around 60,000 km.
The blend flap actuator motors on the Giulietta 940 fail frequently — 5 motors are behind the dashboard. A misaligned sun sensor in the rear-view mirror housing can also cause complete heating failure. Difficult to diagnose, labour-intensive to repair.
The front Brembo brake discs on the Giulietta tend to cause steering wheel vibration when braking above 100 km/h. The cause is often a failed wheel hub, not the disc itself. Warranty replacement within 20,000 km is possible. Brake pad squeal under light pedal pressure is a known issue.
The magnetic clutch on the Giulietta 940's air conditioning compressor switches on and off every second. Either a faulty pressure switch or oil underfill after compressor replacement is the cause. Compressor only available with the clutch, approximately 950 € plus fitment.
