Alfa Romeo 2.9 V6 GTA
Uprated to 540 hp version of the 2.9-litre V6 biturbo — 30 hp more than the QV through optimised turbos, sharper engine mapping and freer exhaust flow. The GTA is Alfa's lightest and sharpest Giulia: carbon roof, carbon bonnet, polycarbonate side windows, titanium exhaust — all told saving around 100 kg over the QV. Only 500 GTAs plus the GTAm (track version with roll cage, no rear seats, Lexan windows). The engine revs even more freely than in the QV thanks to the reduced mass, and the titanium exhaust sounds more metallic and aggressive. Collector's piece with a factory waiting list.
540 hp, –100 kg, Carbon Everywhere — Alfa's Ultimate Saloon
The Giulia GTA is Alfa's most uncompromising road car: 540 hp V6 biturbo, carbon roof, carbon bonnet, polycarbonate windows, titanium exhaust — 100 kg lighter than the already fast QV. The titanium exhaust sounds more metallic and sharper than the QV's steel unit, at full throttle a bright, piercing V6 shriek. The GTAm version goes further still: roll cage, no rear seats, Lexan windows, six-point harnesses. 500 GTA units plus a limited GTAm run, all allocated with waiting lists. Nürburgring time not officially published, but internally well under the QV's record. Six-figure used prices with a rising trend.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Defective check valve behind the oil pump can trigger an oil pressure warning on start. Affects the 2.9 V6 BiTurbo in the Stelvio QF.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning on cold start, metallic banging
According to community reports virtually all 2.9 V6 BiTurbo engines rattle on cold start due to delayed oil pressure build-up in the chain tensioner. After 2–3 minutes of warm-up the noise typically stops; Alfa dealers often deny the problem.
Symptoms: Rattling from the timing chain area on cold start, disappears after 2–3 minutes of warm-up
Some 2019 Giulia/Stelvio QV vehicles had a manufacturing defect where the pump impeller can detach from the carrier. This leads to immediate coolant loss and overheating; a recall for affected vehicle numbers was carried out.
Symptoms: Sudden engine overheating, coolant warning light, steam cloud from engine bay
The 2.9 V6 BiTurbo in the GTA uses an oil cooler heat exchanger. If it leaks, oil enters the cooling circuit or vice versa. In the worst case all coolant hoses, thermostat valves and the heater core must be replaced. Repair is extremely labour-intensive and costly.
Symptoms: Oily coolant, water in the oil (milky dipstick reading), overheating warning, coolant level dropping without external leak
The high-performance catalytic converters on the 2.9 V6 GTA engine are under severe thermal stress. During aggressive driving or overheating events the ceramic substrate can break and ceramic particles can be drawn into the engine. Track use accelerates this wear.
Symptoms: Rattling from the exhaust area, engine warning light with lambda fault, power loss, metallic smell after spirited driving
A weak battery leads to various electronics problems. Fault messages often disappear after a battery replacement.
Symptoms: Various fault messages, starting problems, intermittent failures
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Recall NHTSA 25V586000 for 2017–2019 Giulia: the fuel pump (supplier Vitesco) can fail from heat exposure. Fuel starvation causes sudden engine cut-out while driving without warning. Five accidents and three injuries documented.
Recall for approximately 19,000 Giulia vehicles (2017–2019): brake system software prevents deactivation of the adaptive cruise control during traction control intervention, increasing the risk of an accident. A software update resolves the issue.
The undersized original battery (80 Ah) causes cascading fault messages when discharged: ABS, ESP, FCW, airbag and brake system all report faults simultaneously. Battery replacement (higher capacity) clears all fault codes.
The magnetic clutch on the Giulia 952's air conditioning compressor fails at around 70,000 km. The magnetic clutch is not available separately — only together with the complete compressor (950 € + fitment). Evaporator icing at 17,000 km is also documented.
The infotainment system freezes during longer journeys — buttons and the volume control become unresponsive before the system restarts itself. Software updates reduce frequency but do not fully resolve the issue.
The Giulia 952 exhibits cracking and squealing in the steering column, particularly in the lower section near the pedal area. Insufficient lubrication of the steering column is the cause. Under warranty the complete steering shaft was replaced. First occurrence from around 15,000 km.
Brake pads and discs on the Giulia 952 wear faster than on competitors, especially with spirited driving. The rear brake requires service mode activation before replacement. Front pads are typically due at 40,000–50,000 km.
The Giulia 952 dashboard creaks on crosshatched surfaces and with temperature changes. The rear seat bangs on bumps. Plastic clips on the rear trim vibrate against bare metalwork. Felt padding is a temporary fix.
Reports & Tests
The Giulia impresses with excellent chassis and sporting character, but shows variable build quality from the Cassino plant. Repair costs are significantly above the class average, which is why an experienced Alfa specialist is recommended for maintenance and diagnostics. Early rust on the roof rail and tailgate plus infotainment issues are the most common criticisms.
179 owner complaints filed with NHTSA (2016–2024). Most reported: Fuel System (65), Engine (53), Electrical (51).
