Alfa Romeo 2.2 JTD
The 2.2-litre MultiJet II diesel is the volume diesel for the Giulia and Stelvio — 136–210 hp depending on tune, with up to 470 Nm in the strongest version. For high-mileage drivers and long-distance use, the most sensible engine choice: frugal (5–6 l/100 km), torque-rich, refined. AdBlue SCR, DPF and EGR are emission-related systems with known service issues at high mileage.
Weakest diesel with strongest chassis
136 hp and a manual gearbox make the Giulia a frugal daily car. The outstanding chassis saves the driving experience — surprisingly satisfying for a base diesel.
Engine Weaknesses 6
An M6 bolt on the balance shaft can come loose. The falling shaft can destroy cylinder 4 and the crankshaft (documented total loss at 140,000 km). Very expensive damage.
Symptoms: Loud metallic banging, engine cuts out suddenly, total loss
Oil pressure warnings and engine management faults (MES) are documented on the 2.2D in the Giulia and Stelvio. Diagnosis is often complex and time-consuming.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning, engine warning light, restricted engine power
The vacuum pump mounted on the camshaft can cause oil starvation to the camshaft bearings if its seal fails. In documented cases the camshaft and bearing surfaces were destroyed; complete engine failure can follow.
Symptoms: Oil loss at the vacuum pump flange face, smoke from the engine bay, brake servo pressure loss
Like all modern diesel engines, the 2.2 MultiJet II suffers from EGR carbon build-up and DPF clogging with predominantly city driving. Regular motorway drives are essential.
Symptoms: Engine warning light, power loss, increased consumption, limp mode
The integrated oil cooler in the oil filter housing of the 1.75 TBi can develop leaks. An oil-coolant mix is then possible; upgrading to an external oil cooler is a well-known permanent fix among enthusiasts.
Symptoms: Oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil (mayonnaise), increased oil consumption, coolant loss
The AdBlue injector in the SCR system clogs due to urea crystallisation or fails electrically. Fault code P2BAF (SCRM Recovery Strategy) is typical. A defective injector prevents NOx reduction and leads to restricted driving after a grace distance.
Symptoms: Engine warning light with AdBlue system fault, MIL and Check-AdBlue message, limp mode after several start cycles without repair
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Recall NHTSA 25V586000 for 2017–2019 Giulia: the fuel pump (supplier Vitesco) can fail from heat exposure. Fuel starvation causes sudden engine cut-out while driving without warning. Five accidents and three injuries documented.
Recall for approximately 19,000 Giulia vehicles (2017–2019): brake system software prevents deactivation of the adaptive cruise control during traction control intervention, increasing the risk of an accident. A software update resolves the issue.
The undersized original battery (80 Ah) causes cascading fault messages when discharged: ABS, ESP, FCW, airbag and brake system all report faults simultaneously. Battery replacement (higher capacity) clears all fault codes.
The magnetic clutch on the Giulia 952's air conditioning compressor fails at around 70,000 km. The magnetic clutch is not available separately — only together with the complete compressor (950 € + fitment). Evaporator icing at 17,000 km is also documented.
The infotainment system freezes during longer journeys — buttons and the volume control become unresponsive before the system restarts itself. Software updates reduce frequency but do not fully resolve the issue.
The Giulia 952 exhibits cracking and squealing in the steering column, particularly in the lower section near the pedal area. Insufficient lubrication of the steering column is the cause. Under warranty the complete steering shaft was replaced. First occurrence from around 15,000 km.
Brake pads and discs on the Giulia 952 wear faster than on competitors, especially with spirited driving. The rear brake requires service mode activation before replacement. Front pads are typically due at 40,000–50,000 km.
The Giulia 952 dashboard creaks on crosshatched surfaces and with temperature changes. The rear seat bangs on bumps. Plastic clips on the rear trim vibrate against bare metalwork. Felt padding is a temporary fix.
Reports & Tests
The Giulia impresses with excellent chassis and sporting character, but shows variable build quality from the Cassino plant. Repair costs are significantly above the class average, which is why an experienced Alfa specialist is recommended for maintenance and diagnostics. Early rust on the roof rail and tailgate plus infotainment issues are the most common criticisms.
179 owner complaints filed with NHTSA (2016–2024). Most reported: Fuel System (65), Engine (53), Electrical (51).
