Acura Integra DE5
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
Engine Overview
The Acura Integra DE5 is available with 2 engine variants — from 203 to 325 hp.
1.5-liter turbo four with direct injection, 200 hp. Small L-series engine from the Honda/Acura family, used in the Integra A-Spec from 2023. Proven architecture from the Honda Civic, but noticeably louder under Acura curb weights. CVT smothers any attempt at dynamics, the 6-speed manual saves the character. Typical L15 themes: fuel in oil on short trips, piston ring coking.
No known weaknesses documented.
Mechanically identical to the K20C1 from the Civic Type R: 320 hp, 7,000 rpm redline, forged pistons, VTC on intake and exhaust. The difference from the FL5 is just the mount points — the Integra Type S uses different engine mounts and is built in Marysville instead of Japan. Same strengths, same weaknesses: fuel dilution on short trips is the defining maintenance point.
- !! Rod and bearing limit under tuning (~400 hp)
OEM K20C8 rods are spec'd for the factory 320 hp output. Stage 2 tunes beyond 400 hp or 400 lb-ft regularly bend rods and spin bearings. Hondata and 4 Piston Racing explicitly warn against low-rpm torque spikes. Stock cars not affected.
Symptoms: Engine knock, oil pressure drop, catastrophic failure under full load — tuned cars only - !! Fuel dilution in engine oil from 20,000 km
Direct injection pushes fuel past the rings into the oil on cold starts and short trips. Typical 2–6 percent dilution, more in winter and short-trip use. Honda TSB exists but is considered a band-aid, not a cure. Change oil every 5k miles, track users 3k.
Symptoms: Gasoline smell at oil cap, rising oil level on dipstick, thinned oil in lab analysis - !! Turbo oil return line loosens from 100,000 km
The turbo oil return line can loosen at the connection, leading to oil leaks and turbo damage if ignored. Documented on civicx.com for the FK8 Type R, mechanically identical to the K20C8.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the engine, burnt oil smell, blue smoke under load
