Acura Integra DE5

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

4.0 / 5.0 · Based on 2 engine variants · How we rate

The Acura Integra DE5 (from 2023) is the long-awaited revival of a cult name. Built on the Honda Civic, this liftback sedan is a sportily dressed, daily-usable compact that becomes a genuine enthusiast machine in Type S form with 320 hp. The base version with the 1.5-liter turbo is the pragmatic volume pick, while the Type S sits on the same foundation as the Civic Type R. That the Type S comes exclusively with a six-speed manual is a deliberate nod to the old Integra faithful.

Both engines are fundamentally recommendable but differ in character. The 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo (L15CA) is Honda's proven downsizing unit and reliable enough, but it has a known weakness: in frequent short-trip use in cold climates, fuel dilutes the engine oil, which is why Honda extended the warranty and documented the issue well. Intake-valve deposits from direct injection and occasional charge-air actuator rattle are other items, and in rare cases a head-gasket leak develops between cylinders 2 and 3. The star is the K20C8, Honda's most powerful production four-cylinder: 2.0 liters, twin-scroll turbo, direct injection, and the famous VTEC crossover point where the engine truly wakes up. It's the same block as the Civic Type R and is considered remarkably durable. Its weaknesses are mild: light GDI carbon buildup, some fuel entering the oil, the documented water intrusion in the cylinder-4 spark-plug well, and harmless wastegate clatter.

Because the DE5 is a young car, the vehicle-level issues center mostly on recalls and software. A steering-gear recall (24V744) addresses internal friction from faulty lubrication that makes the steering feel sticky. More serious is the VSA modulator recall (23V430) for an internal brake-fluid leak, plus a recall for a possibly loosely secured driver's seat frame (24V859). Buyers should confirm all recalls have been completed. Everyday annoyances include Wireless CarPlay freezing, noticeable wind noise above about 80 mph, and rattles and buzzes from trim panels and vents that fall below the price point.

Bottom line, the DE5 is a modern, well-built compact with a true driver's highlight in the Type S. The 1.5T is the sensible choice with minor quirks, while the Type S is the desirable enthusiast object that packs a Type-R engine with a bit more comfort and understatement. Prioritize completed recalls, disciplined oil changes to counter dilution, and an ear for interior rattles. Do that, and you get a long-lived, genuinely fun companion.

Engine Overview

The Acura Integra DE5 is available with 2 engine variants — from 200 to 320 hp.

1.5L Turbo I4 · Petrol· 200 PS
2023 2025

1.5L VTEC Turbo — Honda's most important downsizing engine, fitted across nearly all models from 2016. Known issue: fuel dilutes engine oil during frequent short trips in cold weather. Honda responded with extended warranty, revised software, and new piston rings (from 2019). Turbo spools from 1,500 rpm, peak torque at 1,700–5,500 rpm — a wide powerband with no turbo lag. Shorten oil change interval to 7,500 km for short trips. Timing chain maintenance-free. Despite the oil dilution issue, long-lived when properly maintained.

  • !! THE Honda 1.5T issue: unburnt fuel bypasses piston rings into the oil circuit on short trips and cold starts. Oil level RISES (up to 13% fuel content documented). Class action Smith v. Honda (2022). Warranty extended 6 years. No permanent mechanical fix — Honda recommends more frequent oil changes. from 30,000 km

THE Honda 1.5T problem: unburned fuel passes piston rings into oil on short trips/cold starts. Oil level RISES (up to 13% fuel content documented). Class action Smith v. Honda (2022). Warranty extension 6 years. No permanent mechanical fix — Honda recommends more frequent oil changes.

Symptoms: Oil level above maximum, gas smell on dipstick/in cabin, engine stumble, power loss
    0–3,000 $
  • !! Head gasket failure (between cyl. 2 and 3) from 150,000 km

The turbo 1.5 was derived from the naturally aspirated engine without strengthening the head for the higher firing pressure. Between cylinders 2 and 3 there is only a narrow gasket land over a coolant passage — the stretch bolts lose clamping force and the gasket blows. Coolant enters the combustion chamber or oil.

Symptoms: Coolant loss with no visible leak, overheating, milky foam on the oil cap, sweet white exhaust vapour
    2,300–5,500 $
  • !! Recall: Fuel pump (2018-2020) — NHTSA 23V-858

NHTSA 23V-858: a low-density impeller can deform and seize the pump → engine stall while driving. Part of the 2.5M-vehicle recall (Honda + Acura). Free replacement at dealer.

Symptoms: Check engine light, intermittent power loss, hard starting, sudden engine stall while driving

2.0L VTEC Turbo · Petrol· 320 PS
2024 2025

The K20C8 is Honda's most powerful production four-cylinder: 2.0 litres, twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection and the signature VTEC crossover point where the engine genuinely wakes up. Around 320 hp from an aluminium block that already survived sustained track load during factory validation. Power delivery is remarkably linear for a turbo — almost no perceptible lag, a fat torque plateau from roughly 2600 rpm and a keen, rev-hungry top end that pulls past 7000 rpm. The soundtrack is more hard-edged and technical than a bellow, with audible boost hiss and the characteristic electronic wastegate rattle on overrun. The killer detail: a forged crankshaft and sodium-filled exhaust valves make the block effectively tune-proof — many run permanently raised boost without touching the internals. Weak spots are design-inherent: GDI carbon build-up on the intake valves over time, fuel dilution of the oil on short trips, and heat soak of the factory intercooler under sustained full load. Warm it up properly, keep oil-change intervals short and watch the spark plugs, and you get one of the most durable high-performance turbos ever built.

  • !! Water intrusion in the cylinder 4 spark plug well from 40,000 km

Water can enter through the hood scoop and pool in the cylinder 4 spark plug well. Result is corrosion, weak spark and a targeted misfire. Honda documents this in a TSB (25-062).

Symptoms: Stumbling and power loss especially in wet weather, check-engine light with code P0300/P0304, corroded spark plug in cylinder 4.
    80–250 $
  • ! GDI carbon build-up on intake valves from 100,000 km

As a pure direct-injection engine the K20C8 accumulates carbon on the intake valves over time because no fuel washes their backs. Honda mitigates it with partial spray but does not fully prevent it.

Symptoms: Usually inconspicuous; with heavy deposits slightly rough idle, sluggish part-throttle response, rarely misfires. Often only visible on a borescope inspection.
    300–600 $
  • ! Fuel dilution of the engine oil from 20,000 km

Like many turbo GDI engines it dilutes the oil with fuel during short trips and cold running. Oil level appears to rise, viscosity drops. Rarely critical but measurably above the 2% warning threshold.

Symptoms: Rising oil level on the dipstick, fuel smell in the oil, in extreme cases reduced lubrication. Mainly in winter and with frequent cold starts without warm-up.
