Fun Factor? Not Really

Small engine, heavy van

The 1.2 TSI CYVB with 110 hp feels out of place in the Touran II. Insufficient drive, a tiring driving experience.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Timing Belt Failure from Camshaft Adjuster Defect

EA211 engines from model year 2014 had a known defect on the camshaft sprocket (TPI 2038019/4) that could cause timing belt failure and thus engine damage. An improved camshaft adjuster is the known fix.

Symptoms: Sudden engine stall without warning, loud bang when engine fails, unable to restart

600–4,000 $ from 60,000 km
!! Timing Belt Wear (Wet Drive)

The EA211 1.2 TSI CYVB uses a timing belt running in an oil bath. Stick strictly to oil change intervals. Change recommended every 90,000 km or 6 years — do not wait for manufacturer interval.

Symptoms: Rattling from engine bay, rough running, engine warning

400–900 $ from 90,000 km
!! Turbocharger Heat Soak After Shutdown

The small turbocharger of the 1.2 TFSI is susceptible to heat soak when the vehicle is switched off immediately after motorway driving. Oil cokes up in the hot bearing and damages the turbocharger long-term.

Symptoms: Whistling from turbocharger, slight oil consumption, power drop at high load

500–1,500 $ from 120,000 km
! Intake Valve Carbon Buildup at Higher Mileage

The small 1.2 TFSI is also susceptible to deposits on intake valves as a direct injector. At mileages over 80,000 km these can increase fuel consumption.

Symptoms: Slight rough idle, worse cold-start behaviour, slight overconsumption

200–500 $ from 80,000 km
! Ignition Coils Fail

Ignition coils are a known wear item on the 1.2 TFSI. Failure of individual coils causes cylinder misfires. Replacement is cheap but should always be done as a complete set.

Symptoms: Rough running, engine stuttering, fuel smell from exhaust, engine warning light flashing

80–250 $ from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Other Recall: panoramic roof LED module short circuit risk

On vehicles with panoramic roof and ambient lighting (build year up to July 2018), moisture can enter the LED module and cause a short circuit. In the worst case a smouldering fire in the headliner is possible.

!! Other Recall: brake pedal weld can fracture

On certain Touran II vehicles from model year 2020, the weld between the brake pedal and the brake pedal plate can fracture. The pedal can detach and braking effectiveness is lost. Replacement by VW free of charge.

!! Suspension Front axle spring fracture — common at inspection

The Touran II fails roadworthiness inspection with above-average frequency due to defective suspension springs. Broken springs and elevated brake wear are particularly flagged at the front axle.

200–500 $ from 100,000 km
!! Body Water ingress through panoramic roof

Blocked drain valves in the A-pillar drain hoses of the panoramic roof allow water to reach electrical connectors. The result is electronic failures and mould growth inside.

50–600 $
!! HVAC A/C compressor clutch defective

On the Touran 5T, the electromagnetic clutch of the A/C compressor can fail. The centre bolt does not rotate with the pulley — a known failure of the freewheel clutch. Workshop cost depending on the repair route: 600–1,500 €.

400–1,500 $ from 100,000 km
! Brakes Elevated brake wear

Brake pads and discs wear faster on the Touran II due to its high vehicle weight compared to comparable compact cars. Rear discs have a typical service life of around 50,000 km.

200–600 $ from 50,000 km
! Interior Headrests don't engage

On certain Touran II vehicles from model year 2018, headrests cannot engage correctly. VW has initiated a service action. Certain batches of the rear bench seating are affected.

0–200 $
! Electronics Infotainment system freezes

The MIB2 infotainment system can freeze or crash, particularly after software updates. Navigation and telephony then fail. Usually resolved by a software update.
