VW Touran
The 1.4 TSI Twincharger combines a Roots supercharger and turbocharger β unique engineering, but double the complexity: timing chain, supercharger clutch, and pistons are the critical points. Structurally defective pistons were fitted until 2012 (part number 03C107065CK as replacement). Regular oil changes every 10,000 km with approved oil are absolutely critical.
Twincharger, Much Worry
CAVD Twincharger with DSG in the Touran: known problem combination. Complex technology without any real fun dividend in a van.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The EA111 CAVD is notorious for premature timing chain stretch. Defective tensioners and worn guide rails can cause chain elongation from as little as 40,000β60,000 km. If the chain skips, immediate engine damage results. VW only solved the problem with the EA211 (timing belt).
Symptoms: Rattling noise on cold start, MIL, rough running, in worst case abrupt shutdown
All CAVD engines up to 2012 have structurally defective pistons. Under thermal load the ring land breaks; piston rings lose their sealing function. Oil consumption of 1 litre/1,000 km and more is typical. Repair with piston replacement costs β¬1,500β4,000.
Symptoms: Blue smoke from exhaust, rapidly increasing oil loss, oil consumption above 0.5 L/1000 km, power loss
The magnetic clutch that engages and disengages the Roots supercharger fails prematurely. Fault code 04269 (magnetic clutch for mechanical charger). Repair: β¬450β680 including fitting.
Symptoms: No pull in the lower rev range below 2,500 rpm, normal power above (turbo alone), fault code 04269, rattling from engine bay
The variable camshaft adjuster on the CAVD is sensitive to oil pressure and oil quality. Insufficient pressure from old oil causes malfunction or wear. Solenoid valve or adjuster unit: β¬150β600.
Symptoms: Fault code P0011/P0021, idle hesitation on cold start, occasional misfires
As a consequence of the piston/oil consumption problem engine oil enters the intake tract and oils up the intercooler. The oil burns in the cylinders and can irreparably damage the intercooler. Intercooler replacement is necessary alongside piston replacement.
Symptoms: Oil film in intake manifold, blue or whitish exhaust smoke, power loss from oil film in charge air system
As a direct injection engine fuel does not wash the intake valves β oil mist from the crankcase ventilation settles and forms carbon deposits. Walnut shell blasting cleaning recommended every 60,000β80,000 km.
Symptoms: Idle hesitation, cold-start difficulties, slight power loss, occasional misfires
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
The 7-speed DSG (DQ200, dry clutch) shows juddering on take-off, delayed shifts, and in severe cases gearbox failure. Primarily affects build years 2008β2015. Regular oil changes every 60,000 km are critical.
The rear coil springs frequently break at the lowest coil due to corrosion. The problem occurs from around 80,000 km, but has also been documented at 38,000 km. Replace both sides simultaneously.
A faulty microswitch in the brake/rear fog light control unit simultaneously causes failures of the third brake light, the radiator fan (running continuously), and the windscreen wipers. Typical age-related defect.
The Touran 1T suffers from inadequate corrosion protection. Typical rust spots are the sills, front wings, the tailgate around the number plate light, and the rear axle brake shields.
Water enters the boot or footwell through porous seals on the tailgate and sunroof drain. Common causes: blocked drain hoses or a leaking third brake light.
The A/C compressor can fail at higher mileages. Refrigerant loss through leaking valves or a worn compressor is the common cause. Repair is costly.
Rear brake calipers can seize through rust and lack of maintenance, causing uneven pad wear and, in severe cases, overheated discs. Regular cleaning is recommended.
Electric window regulator motors wear out prematurely and seize. Track guides can crack. Typical wear from medium mileage onwards.
The headliner detaches on older vehicles due to moisture and UV ageing. Particularly in the B-pillar area and sunroof frame. Repair requires removing the entire headliner.
