VW Touareg

CVVA 3.0L V6 TDI 262 hp Automatic All-wheel drive SUV 2014–2018
– Be Careful
Engine CVVA – Be Careful 6,950–37,600 €

SCR version of the V6 TDI with 193 kW for the Touareg II facelift. With AdBlue injection, fewer EGR problems than its predecessor.

Fun Factor? Decent

Refined touring V6

262 hp from the 3.0 V6 TDI is a decent package β€” a confident but characterless long-distance powertrain.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Timing Chain Tensioner Fatigues

The SCR facelift engine CVVA also shares the timing chain problems of the 3.0 TDI family. Cases documented from 80,000 km. Repair costs between 1,500 and 6,500 euros depending on workshop and scope.

Symptoms: Rattling from the engine area after cold start or extended standing time, diminishing once at operating temperature

1,500–6,500 € from 100,000 km
!! EGR Cooler Fouled

Despite the revised SCR exhaust system, EGR cooler fouling remains a known issue on the CVVA. Soot particles block the cooler and valve, especially with frequent city use.

Symptoms: Sluggish throttle response, misfires, occasional MIL without limp mode

300–900 € from 100,000 km
!! Diesel Particulate Filter Clogged

The DPF in the CVVA Touareg clogs with pure city use since regeneration temperature is rarely reached. The heavy vehicle needs regular motorway runs for passive DPF regeneration.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, power reduction, increased fuel consumption, limp mode

300–2,000 € from 130,000 km
! AdBlue Fill Level Sensor Defective

The SCR sensor in the AdBlue tank outputs incorrect fill level readings. The vehicle warns of an empty AdBlue tank despite a full one and threatens to refuse to start. Reset via VCDS is only a temporary fix.

Symptoms: False AdBlue warning despite full tank, countdown to immobilisation continues after refilling

200–600 €
! ACT Cylinder Deactivation Causes Vibrations

The CVVA 1.5 TSI EA211evo (Golf 7/8, Tiguan) switches between 2- and 4-cylinder operation via ACT. In 2-cylinder mode noticeable vibrations and droning occur at the steering wheel and accelerator pedal. VW has released several software updates (2019–2025) that reduce but do not fully eliminate the problem.

Symptoms: Vibrations at steering wheel and accelerator pedal at part throttle, droning at low rpm, judder when switching between cylinder modes

0–300 € from 20,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 15

!! Suspension Air suspension: compressor relay and condensate damage

Same system weakness as the predecessor: the 40A relay seizes after 3–4 years; condensate ice blocks the compressor in winter. Compressor overheating can be dangerous. Compressor replacement: 400–1,500 €.

400–2,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Electronics CAN bus failure: multiple systems fail simultaneously

CAN bus communication faults cause the simultaneous failure of multiple systems (reversing camera, ACC, towing module, start-stop). Often caused by a faulty trailer control unit J345 or insufficient battery voltage.

200–2,000 € from 80,000 km
!! Gearbox Transfer case bearing damage at front axle output

On the Touareg 7P, the ball bearing at the front axle output of the transfer case wears due to insufficient lubrication in the ZF transfer case. Repair requires approx. 10 hours of workshop time.

800–2,900 € from 150,000 km
!! Brakes Brake discs: high wear due to vehicle weight

Brake discs wear out prematurely on the heavy Touareg 7P, sometimes after just 30,000–40,000 km. Full brake service (front and rear axle) costs approx. 2,800 €. The electric parking brake requires software tools for pad changes.

800–2,800 € from 40,000 km
!! Electronics Electric parking brake: malfunctions

Electric parking brake fails to release or shows fault messages. The cause is defective actuator switches or actuator motors. Repair: 300–800 €. Software tools are essential for pad changes.

300–800 € from 80,000 km
!! Body Panoramic roof: leaks and water ingress

Seals between the longitudinal and transverse drain channels of the panoramic roof fail, especially on 2015 model year vehicles. Water penetrates and rusts internal metal carriers. Frame replacement can cost up to €1,600.

200–1,600 €
!! Electronics ACC and Front Assist: spontaneous failure

Adaptive cruise control and Front Assist regularly drop out and show 'unavailable'. Often caused by a dirty or misaligned radar sensor. Radar sensor replacement costs over 2,000 €.

500–2,500 €
!! Rust Door flange corrosion on door edges

Rust forms in the door flanges and at door inner edges, particularly on the tailgate. Paint undermining creates visible blisters. Less common than on the predecessor, but documented on older 7P models.

300–2,000 € from 120,000 km
!! Gearbox Automatic gearbox: oil loss and shift juddering

The automatic gearbox shows irregular shift behaviour and oil loss at higher mileages. Regular gearbox oil changes (every 60,000 km) are important. Gearbox overhaul: 3,000–6,000 €.

200–6,000 € from 150,000 km
!! Body Propshaft centre bearing defective

The rubber bearing in the rear propshaft ages and cracks as the rubber becomes brittle through weathering. VW only supplies the complete propshaft β€” individual centre bearing replacement is not factory-supported.

350–1,400 € from 130,000 km
!! Body Water ingress at the rear / boot area

On the Touareg 7P, the water drain hose in the rear wheel arch detaches from its holder. Water runs directly into the spare wheel well instead of outside. The hose can be permanently secured with cable ties.

50–300 €
! Interior Panoramic roof: creaking and rattling noises

The panoramic glass roof creaks especially on the motorway due to play in the sliding rails. Acid-free synthetic grease on the rails usually resolves the problem.

0–200 €
! Interior Leather seats: premature wear on driver's side

Vienna leather seats show wear-through on the driver's seat surface after approx. 2–3 years. Leather quality is considered a weak point, although the interior overall is regarded as high quality.

200–1,500 €
! HVAC Rear blower motor (4-zone AC) failure

On the Touareg 7P with 4-zone climate control, the blower motor in the boot (left side) fails. Cause is worn carbon brushes or a defective PWM control unit. The installation position makes repair labour-intensive.

150–500 € from 120,000 km
! Electronics Electric tailgate won't open

On the Touareg 7P with electric tailgate, the drive motor fails. The tailgate doesn't respond to the switch, key, or interior button. Failing gas struts increase the load on the motor further.

200–800 € from 100,000 km
