VW Tayron
Top diesel in the T-Roc with 190 hp and all-wheel drive. Powerful and well suited to long distances.
Powerful and comfortable
193 hp and 4Motion give the Tayron noticeably more shove — comfort-focused character with a welcome power surplus.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The DFHA in the Ateca/Tarraco 4Drive shows EGR cooler cracks from thermal stress of the high-output variant (140 kW). Coolant can enter the intake tract. Repair with new EGR cooler or cooler kit.
Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible leak, coolant smell in the cabin, white steam from exhaust
With a clogged DPF or EGR cooler crack, the DFHA turbocharger can be damaged by oil contamination. High thermal load of the 190 hp variant increases the risk. Early DPF replacement protects the turbo.
Symptoms: Whistling from turbo, power loss, oil mist in intake tract, fault code P0299
Cracks in the EGR cooler allow coolant into the exhaust path — gradual coolant loss, whitish smoke and engine protection warning. If ignored, cylinder head damage threatens. EGR cooler replacement costs 600–1,000 euros.
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust, dropping coolant level without visible leak, fault code P0401, rough idle.
Defective water pump or stuck regulator slide (TPI 2041955) cause overheating — coolant temperature rises to 130°C. Primarily affects vehicles up to production date 09/2014; combine replacement with timing belt.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature gauge rising unusually quickly, engine temperature warning light, power reduction from engine protection.
A clogged DPF increases exhaust back pressure and permanently stresses the turbine housing bearings. Oil contamination from old oil accelerates turbo damage. Replacement 900–1,800 euros.
Symptoms: Whistling or hissing noise under load, sluggish boost build-up, oil in intercooler hose, fault code P0299.
Frequent short trips prevent active DPF regeneration (at least 15 min motorway driving needed). Filter clogs — back pressure increase stresses the turbocharger and triggers Limp Mode. Professional cleaning 350–600 euros.
Symptoms: 'Particulate filter loaded' message in instrument cluster, increased fuel consumption, power loss from Limp Mode, black soot when accelerating.
Vehicle Weaknesses 16
Assembly fault during production: the rear diffuser is not correctly fastened and can detach completely while driving. Approximately 11,500 Tayron vehicles affected (action code 66A1), production 11/2024–05/2025.
Curtain airbags in the second row at the C-pillar were not correctly fastened during the production period 12/2024–02/2025 (action code 69OX). Protection in an accident not guaranteed.
Tayron vehicles produced in January 2025 (action code 69TE) have defective instrument panels that may impair passenger airbag deployment. 683 vehicles affected in Germany.
On the Tayron eHybrid, the AC fails at ambient temperatures above 25°C — even with the combustion engine running and sufficient energy available. Only lukewarm air from the vents. Not yet addressed by the manufacturer.
At ambient temperatures above 25–30°C, the Tayron eHybrid's AC only delivers lukewarm air from the vents — even with the petrol engine running and full energy available. The problem appears to be systemic; workshop visits have so far found no lasting solution.
The Tayron I uses the modular MIB4 infotainment system. Display freezes, fails to start, or flickers. Software updates improve the situation but don't fully resolve it.
The 7-speed DSG DQ200 with dry clutch shows clutch shudder and judder on cold start and in stop-and-go traffic. Clutch wear and mechatronic unit failures are known VAG weak points.
Complex driver assistance systems on the Tayron I (ACC, lane keep, emergency braking) show sporadic warning lights and occasional false triggers. Recalibration necessary after windscreen replacement.
At ambient temperatures above 25°C, early Tayron owners report insufficient cooling performance. On the eHybrid variant, the thermal system is additionally loaded by battery cooling.
The MIB3 infotainment system freezes or becomes unresponsive. Affects navigation, media connectivity, and the interface. MQB evo platform issue, known from Tiguan, Golf 8, and other VW models.
The silver foil on the illuminated VW badge on the tailgate peels away from the backing plate within a few weeks. The complete centre strip must be replaced as only the entire unit is serviceable.
On the MQB evo platform, the front axle sway bar links are known to be wear-prone. Clunking noises when turning and over bumps sometimes appear within the warranty period.
The standard rear brake discs show pronounced rust formation after just a few days of standing. Especially with low rear brake use, surface rust appears with scraping noises on pull-away.
Owners report rattling from the sunroof, loose parts in the tailgate, and poorly fitting interior trim. The illuminated rear logo also shows early blooming. Typical teething issues of the new model.
MQB platform steering issue: clicking and creaking noises when parking and at full lock, caused by CV boot gaiters, ball joints, or the electric power steering.
The illuminated VW logo on the tailgate shows a blooming effect (diffuse scatter light) on early Tayron vehicles. Purely cosmetic issue; a VW goodwill solution is expected.
