VW T5
VR6 engine with 173 kW, powerful but thirsty (14–16 L). Timing chain is long-lived; ancillaries become wear-prone at high mileage.
V6 Bulli
The 3.2 V6 BKK with 235 hp and automatic makes the T5 I a highlight among vans. Unexpected driving pleasure.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The timing chain stretches especially with Longlife oil and extended service intervals. Once deviation exceeds −8.0° crank angle, replacement is mandatory. Engine removal required.
Symptoms: Clattering noise on cold start, rough running, check engine light, possible engine failure without warning
The 3.2 V6 BKK is especially prone to timing chain stretch. Cases documented from 61,000 km, typically between 79,000–107,000 km. VW mostly refused goodwill. Repair costs: €2,700–5,000.
Symptoms: Chain rattle on cold start, check engine light, cam sensor fault code
The cam phasers can fail from around 180,000 km. The engine enters limp mode and loses top-end pull.
Symptoms: Severe power loss, engine runs very roughly after restart, limp mode active
The dual-mass flywheel and clutch are susceptible because the high torque stresses the system. Total cost €1,700–2,700.
Symptoms: Vibrations on pull-away, grinding when engaging the clutch, metallic clattering at idle
The 3.2 V6 tends toward elevated oil consumption at higher mileage due to worn valve stem seals. On cold start, blue smoke appears for 10–15 seconds.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, elevated oil consumption, smoke on overrun downhill
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
The EGR cooler breaks down internally and releases aluminium particles into the intake tract, which can cause engine damage. Coolant loss with no visible leak is a typical early sign. Repair costs €1,100–2,200.
Door seals with metal cores have sharp edges that damage the rubber. Penetrating water corrodes the metal beneath. The powertrain subframe under the engine rusts heavily. Early model years affected from approximately 4–5 years old.
Rear coil springs typically break at the top coil without warning for the driver. Vehicles of all model years affected from 50,000 km. Aftermarket springs often don't fit — use only genuine VW springs. Cost €160–400.
The 6-speed DSG DQ250 in the Multivan is prone to jerky gear changes and clutch slip on pull-away, especially when the gearbox oil change every 60,000 km is missed. The mechatronic unit and clutch linings are well-known failure points.
Due to the high vehicle weight, shock absorbers wear noticeably from approximately 90,000–130,000 km. Rust on damper mounts on older models. Strut mounts creak when turning. Complete replacement costs approximately €900–1,400.
When the 2.5-litre TDI water pump fails it expels coolant externally via a hose near the right driveshaft. Water-in-oil contamination possible. Replacement costs approximately €300–600. White residue on the pump is an early warning sign.
On the T5 7H/7J the sliding door lock fails due to broken plastic parts and springs inside the lock. Since the lock cannot be dismantled into individual parts, complete replacement is required. Cost €51–92.
The 'save' microswitch in the electric sliding door sticks or fails, preventing opening and closing. A defective anti-trap sensor also permanently stops the door. Repair approximately €200 (switch approximately €5, mostly labour).
On the T5 7H/7J, the headliner backing separates from the foam from approximately 150,000 km due to foam ageing. Initially the edges above the windscreen drop, then bubbles and sagging areas spread further.
