VW T5
Robust five-cylinder unit injector diesel with high torque, but with a design weakness in the PDE mounting — the one-sided clamping allows the units to tilt and damage the cylinder head. Regular oil changes and VTG turbo care are critical.
AXD Underdog
131 hp five-cylinder diesel in the T5 — sounds characterful, but the unit-injector issues and fragile cylinder head make this engine a problem child. Check service history thoroughly before buying.
Engine Weaknesses 5
By design, PD units are only clamped on one side and tilt over time. The seat in the head wears, diesel enters the engine oil — without repair, engine damage follows.
Symptoms: Rough running, rattling at idle, diesel smell in oil, engine oil becomes cloudy, cold start problems
The variable geometry turbocharger shows above-average failure rates. Soot-covered vanes seize and the turbocharger can no longer regulate boost pressure — limp mode activates.
Symptoms: Significant power loss, whistling noise on acceleration, black smoke, engine warning light, limp mode
Individual PD units suffer electrical short circuits or open circuits. The affected cylinder misfires and the engine runs very roughly. Replacement unit approx. 490 €.
Symptoms: Rattling and knocking on acceleration, fault memory entry for injector short circuit, rough running under load
In an overheated or poorly maintained engine the head gasket burns through. Full cylinder head removal required — more involved on the AXD due to replacement of PD seats.
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust, coolant loss without visible leak, mayonnaise on oil filler cap
The intercooler on the VW T5 AXD cracks or develops a leak. Boost loss causes the turbocharger to work under overload. Typically fails around 90,000 km.
Symptoms: Power loss, whistling from engine bay, white smoke, knocking noises after intercooler failure
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
The EGR cooler breaks down internally and releases aluminium particles into the intake tract, which can cause engine damage. Coolant loss with no visible leak is a typical early sign. Repair costs €1,100–2,200.
Door seals with metal cores have sharp edges that damage the rubber. Penetrating water corrodes the metal beneath. The powertrain subframe under the engine rusts heavily. Early model years affected from approximately 4–5 years old.
Rear coil springs typically break at the top coil without warning for the driver. Vehicles of all model years affected from 50,000 km. Aftermarket springs often don't fit — use only genuine VW springs. Cost €160–400.
Due to the high vehicle weight, shock absorbers wear noticeably from approximately 90,000–130,000 km. Rust on damper mounts on older models. Strut mounts creak when turning. Complete replacement costs approximately €900–1,400.
The gear linkage cables dry out and become stiff. On 6-speed gearboxes the shift head bolt on top of the gearbox comes loose. Cable lubrication for approximately €40, shift head repair kit approximately €40.
When the 2.5-litre TDI water pump fails it expels coolant externally via a hose near the right driveshaft. Water-in-oil contamination possible. Replacement costs approximately €300–600. White residue on the pump is an early warning sign.
On the T5 7H/7J the sliding door lock fails due to broken plastic parts and springs inside the lock. Since the lock cannot be dismantled into individual parts, complete replacement is required. Cost €51–92.
The 'save' microswitch in the electric sliding door sticks or fails, preventing opening and closing. A defective anti-trap sensor also permanently stops the door. Repair approximately €200 (switch approximately €5, mostly labour).
On the T5 7H/7J, the headliner backing separates from the foam from approximately 150,000 km due to foam ageing. Initially the edges above the windscreen drop, then bubbles and sagging areas spread further.
