VW T-Roc
Top diesel in the T-Roc with 190 hp and all-wheel drive. Powerful and well suited to long distances.
Sporty city escapee
190 hp 2.0 TDI and 4Motion make the T-Roc a driving-fun candidate β 0β60 in 6.7 seconds for a compact SUV.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The DFHA in the Ateca/Tarraco 4Drive shows EGR cooler cracks from thermal stress of the high-output variant (140 kW). Coolant can enter the intake tract. Repair with new EGR cooler or cooler kit.
Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible leak, coolant smell in the cabin, white steam from exhaust
With a clogged DPF or EGR cooler crack, the DFHA turbocharger can be damaged by oil contamination. High thermal load of the 190 hp variant increases the risk. Early DPF replacement protects the turbo.
Symptoms: Whistling from turbo, power loss, oil mist in intake tract, fault code P0299
Cracks in the EGR cooler allow coolant into the exhaust path β gradual coolant loss, whitish smoke and engine protection warning. If ignored, cylinder head damage threatens. EGR cooler replacement costs 600β1,000 euros.
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust, dropping coolant level without visible leak, fault code P0401, rough idle.
Defective water pump or stuck regulator slide (TPI 2041955) cause overheating β coolant temperature rises to 130Β°C. Primarily affects vehicles up to production date 09/2014; combine replacement with timing belt.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature gauge rising unusually quickly, engine temperature warning light, power reduction from engine protection.
A clogged DPF increases exhaust back pressure and permanently stresses the turbine housing bearings. Oil contamination from old oil accelerates turbo damage. Replacement 900β1,800 euros.
Symptoms: Whistling or hissing noise under load, sluggish boost build-up, oil in intercooler hose, fault code P0299.
Frequent short trips prevent active DPF regeneration (at least 15 min motorway driving needed). Filter clogs β back pressure increase stresses the turbocharger and triggers Limp Mode. Professional cleaning 350β600 euros.
Symptoms: 'Particulate filter loaded' message in instrument cluster, increased fuel consumption, power loss from Limp Mode, black soot when accelerating.
Vehicle Weaknesses 12
The dry 7-speed DSG DQ200 is the most common source of complaints on the T-Roc. At 30,000β50,000 km, burned clutch linings or mechatronics failure are a real risk. Repair cost: 1,400β6,000 β¬.
4Motion versions of the T-Roc share the VAG Haldex pre-charge pump wear issue caused by contaminated oil. Regular oil changes every 40,000 km are essential. Repair: 500β3,500 β¬.
On the T-Roc, all camera-based assistance systems repeatedly fail at the same time. Faults occur particularly in rain, frost, and when the windscreen is misted. The cause is camera failure or a voltage drop.
A well-known issue on the T-Roc A11: the AC condenser is damaged by stone chips. Owners reported total AC failure after just approximately 9,700 km with repair costs around β¬880. Protection grilles are the only preventive measure.
On the T-Roc A11 (with optional electric tailgate), one of the spindle drive motors fails. According to workshop feedback this occurs regularly. One motor costs approximately β¬486; bilateral failure means repair costs up to β¬1,000.
A very large number of T-Roc owners report squealing brakes when reversing and premature brake disc wear. TΓV reports confirm brake defects as a common fault. Brake set: 300β600 β¬.
Rust appears on the screws of the tailgate motor drive unit within just 2 years. Material defect in the screw batch. Replaceable under warranty; cheap to fix without warranty.
At launch the T-Roc attracted attention for its extensive hard plastics. Seat fabric frays after 2 years, panel gaps are inconsistent, and the speakers distort bass.
The electric tailgate on the T-Roc opens by itself without being triggered, or fails to close properly β the parcel shelf gets caught during automatic closing and causes paint scratches.
The starter battery fitted for the start-stop system on the T-Roc discharges unusually fast and fails prematurely. Replacement with a higher-capacity AGM battery is recommended. Cost: 150β300 β¬.
The T-Roc exhibits rattling and grinding noises at full steering lock, especially at low speeds. The cause is CV joint boots under pressure load or EPS system limits.
On the T-Roc A11, creaking and knocking noises from the front axle appear from around 60,000 km. Causes: worn strut mounts, CV joint boots, or wishbone bushings. Typical MQB problem.
