VW LT

AGL 2.5L TDI 83 hp Manual Rear-wheel drive Van 1996–2006
– Be Careful
Engine AGL – Be Careful 2,280–4,350 $

Robust 5-cylinder van diesel with long service life when maintained. Injection pump and glow plugs are the classic wear points. Timing belt is safety-critical — replace every 5–6 years regardless of mileage.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Worker with No Joy

The 2.5 TDI AGL with 83 hp in the heavy LT II is chronically underpowered. Suitable only for the simplest van tasks.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Timing belt failure when interval is exceeded

Timing belt on the 5-cylinder must be replaced every 120,000 km or at the latest after 5–6 years. Failure causes catastrophic engine damage from valve collision.

Symptoms: Engine suddenly won't start, loud clatter on start attempt, no compression

350–700 $ from 120,000 km
!! Head gasket leaking

At high mileage the head gasket can fail from excess cooling system pressure. Risk of coolant loss and overheating. Service the timing belt at the same time when removing the head.

Symptoms: Dropping coolant level, mayonnaise formation on oil cap, white smoke from exhaust

900–1,500 $ from 250,000 km
!! Injection pump sealing problems

The distributor injection pump tends to sealing problems and occasional fuel pressure loss. Vehicles are difficult to start or stall while driving. Overhaul by a Bosch service centre is possible.

Symptoms: Difficult starting, no fuel pressure on the delivery side, engine won't start

800–1,400 $ from 180,000 km
!! Coked EGR valve

The EGR valve on the Transporter diesel clogs with soot in frequent short-trip operation. A stuck valve causes power loss and increased soot formation in the intake tract.

Symptoms: Significant power loss, heavy soot production, rough acceleration

150–500 $ from 120,000 km
! Seized glow plugs

Glow plugs rust seized at high mileage and snap when removed. Remove only when warm with a maximum of 30 Nm. Replace all five at the same time.

Symptoms: Cold-start difficulties, black smoke on cold start, engine warning light

80–250 $ from 150,000 km
