VW GTX
Further development of the APP550 for the ID.7 with optimised software and up to 175 kW DC charging power. Motor identical in construction to the ID.4/ID.5 GTX front motor, but with adapted thermal management. Software-related electrical system faults and HV heater failures are the most common problems.
Tourer with Punch
The ID.7 GTX with 340 hp and AWD is VW's answer to the Tesla Model S — comfortable, fast and long-distance capable.
Engine Weaknesses 5
A recurring fault in the high-voltage heater control unit triggers the message 'Electric system not functioning correctly'. Particularly frequent in cold conditions. Replacement of the HV heating unit is required; in some cases the fault returns.
Symptoms: Warning 'Electric system not functioning correctly', heating fails, driver assistance systems deactivated
Start-up problems at the Kassel stator production facility in 2023 also affected ID.7 units: manufacturing tolerances were not always met, and individual motors fail to achieve rated output.
Symptoms: Lower performance than factory specification, measurably weaker acceleration
The APP550-ID7 can trigger warnings such as 'Electric system not functioning correctly', caused by manufacturing variances in the stator. VW resolved many cases via software update or motor replacement.
Symptoms: Electric system warning, drivetrain limits power, vehicle fails to restart
With software version V5.4, the ID.7 fails to resume charging after a charge session interruption. VW confirmed the software bug. The vehicle remains in a wait state until the charge cable is physically re-plugged.
Symptoms: App shows 'Charging being checked', vehicle does not resume charging, charge process blocked after pause, only manual re-plugging helps
Traffic sign recognition, blind-spot assist and parking assist report sporadic faults and deactivate themselves. Usually temporary and resolvable by restarting; can indicate a control unit or wiring problem.
Symptoms: Assistance system warnings, systems switch off on their own, faults after cold start
Vehicle Weaknesses 12
A faulty gas generator in the passenger airbag can rupture upon deployment and fling metal fragments. Life-threatening risk. VW recommends not using the passenger seat until repaired.
A manufacturing defect in high-voltage battery modules can lead to excessive self-discharge and thermal overload. Fire risk. Limit charge level to max. 80% until repaired.
The ID.7 only charges the 12V battery while driving, but drains it in park through standby consumers. After a few days of inactivity, complete vehicle immobilisation is possible.
The ID.7's CO₂ heat pump shows leaks at sealing joints, refrigerant loss, and compressor failures. According to forum consensus, VW has insufficient mastery of CO₂ technology.
Intermittent error messages 'Electrical system not working properly' with failures of sign recognition, lane keep, and adaptive cruise control. Cause is partly a defective heater or coolant pump.
Front Assist and ACC sporadically trigger emergency braking with no obstacle present. Stationary vehicles are sometimes detected too late, while unrelated objects trigger warning levels.
Misaligned tail lights (up to 2 mm offset), loose foam material in the wheel arch, leaking headlights, and door seals were reported on several ID.7 examples from the moment of delivery.
During the transition from regenerative to mechanical braking, the pedal feels spongy with a long dead travel. Particularly during light braking, there is no defined pressure point. Typical MEB blending issue.
After rain or a car wash followed by frost, the ID.7's charging port lid freezes. The hinge mechanism can collect water which freezes at sub-zero temperatures, blocking the lid and making charging impossible.
The high-voltage battery sporadically shows state-of-charge jumps of 4–5%, particularly within the first 18,000 km. The displayed kWh do not always match the actual SoC, which complicates range planning.
Since the ID.7 decelerates primarily via regeneration, the mechanical brakes are rarely used. Rear drum brakes and front discs corrode quickly, which attracts attention at inspection and reduces service life.
Rattling and creaking noises from the dashboard, climate vents, and door panels, especially on cobblestones and in the cold. Chrome trim gaps and sharp edges on the gear selector are additional quality issues.
