VW GTX
High-performance MEB platform electric motor with 210 kW system output (AWD), fitted in the ID.4/ID.5. The Kassel plant production line started in 2023 with quality fluctuations, leading to reduced maximum power on individual vehicles. Brake issues are the most common complaint.
GTX with AWD
The ID.4 GTX with 340 hp and all-wheel drive delivers genuine fun β strong pull and sure-footed traction in any weather.
Engine Weaknesses 5
A five-fold elevated brake defect rate compared to average has been documented. Rear drum brakes tend to squeal and produce uneven braking; missing ESP pump bolts led to an official recall.
Symptoms: Squealing rear brakes, jerky deceleration, ESP/brake warning message
Ramp-up issues at the stator production facility in Kassel in 2023 led to quality variations: some motors do not reach the specified maximum output of 210 kW. VW sold affected units without rework.
Symptoms: Lower than expected acceleration, 0β100 km/h time worse than factory spec
Isolated reports of failed on-board chargers: vehicles no longer charge via AC (11 kW) while DC charging continues to work. Affects individual ID.4 model year 2024 vehicles. OBC replacement required.
Symptoms: AC charging aborts after a few seconds, charging power fluctuates wildly, DC charging normal
The brake discs on the ID.4/ID.5 APP550 Dual Motor corrode quickly during standstill periods and warp. TΓV reports name the braking system as the most common fault source.
Symptoms: Brake vibration at low speeds, creaking rear brakes, uneven braking effect
During the ramp-up phase of APP550-DM production in Kassel, quality defects occurred in stator windings. Affected motors may not develop the full 210 kW.
Symptoms: Lower maximum output than specified, drivetrain fault message, reduced range
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
The 12V auxiliary battery discharges excessively, triggering cascade failures of the steering, central locking, and other systems. Problem known since market launch.
A software fault in the door handle control unit can cause a door to open unintentionally. VW recalled approximately 25,031 ID.5 vehicles (production period 06/2023β08/2024).
Due to infrequent mechanical braking thanks to regeneration, brake discs corrode quickly. Warped discs documented from around 8,000β25,000 km; some resolved under warranty.
The infotainment system crashes and shows a black display. OTA updates can temporarily disable vehicle functions. Vehicle settings are reset after every start.
Front Assist can trigger falsely in certain lighting situations and tight manoeuvres. Sensitive to oncoming light and car park structures. The front camera also has documented failures.
Condensation forming inside the lamp housings is reported by many ID.5 owners. VW describes this as 'normal', however owners of other manufacturers' vehicles do not report this phenomenon.
Ambient light colour, seat settings, climate options, and drive mode are sporadically reset. The problem occurs without a recognisable trigger and is software-related.
The ID.5 shares the MEB platform's typical brake pedal feel: the eBKV-controlled transition between regenerative and hydraulic braking creates an unclear, soft pressure point in the light braking range.
MEB platform issue: the charge flap can freeze at sub-zero temperatures and in wet conditions and become impossible to open. The community has developed 3D-printed protective covers as a workaround.
Clattering noises from the front, documented in the meinid thread with over 230 combined reports for ID.4/ID.5. Causes are often loose underbody clips or the bonnet stay.
