VW Golf Plus
The BMM is the most solid of the 2.0 TDI PD engines in the EA188 range — unlike the BKD or BMN, it lacks the dangerous hexagonal oil pump drive. The timing belt drives the camshaft and injection pump; a snap causes total engine destruction. Unit injectors wear from around 160,000 km.
Sensible Plus Diesel
The BMM in the Golf Plus is a solid common-rail TDI without the PD risks of the BKD. 140 hp is adequate for the heavy Plus body.
Engine Weaknesses 5
If the replacement interval is exceeded (manufacturer: 150,000 km; in practice 100,000–120,000 km is recommended), a snapped timing belt means total engine failure — valves meet pistons. The belt is often never replaced by the previous owner.
Symptoms: No advance warning of engine damage; engine won't start or cuts out while driving; loud bang before stalling
From around 160,000 km the unit injector elements wear out: the injector needle no longer seats correctly, diesel drips uncontrolled into the combustion chamber. Ultrasonic cleaning may help; replacement is often needed (approx. €650–800 per unit).
Symptoms: Rough cold running, hesitation on pull-away, significantly increased fuel consumption, white smoke when cold
EGR cooler and EGR valve clog with oily carbon, especially with short-trip driving. Result: power loss, rough running, increased fuel consumption. Cooler cleaning or replacement is essential; with heavy coke build-up, clean the intake manifold too.
Symptoms: Power loss during acceleration, hesitation at low rpm, fault code P0401/P0402, black smoke
With predominantly short-trip driving, the DPF cannot complete active regeneration. Ash content above 60 g means a full DPF — cleaning or replacement required. Cheap replacements reportedly fill up much faster than OEM parts.
Symptoms: DPF warning light, strong fuel smell at standstill, increased fuel consumption, power loss
The dual-mass flywheel is a classic wear item at higher mileage on the BMM. It wears prematurely especially with short trips and high torque in lower gears. Always recommended to replace together with the clutch.
Symptoms: Rattling and clattering when starting and switching off, drivetrain vibrations, clutch judder
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Thermomechanical overload in the ABS/ESP control unit can interrupt the earth connection, disabling ABS and ESP. Affects vehicles produced 05/2008 to 08/2010. Software update or control unit replacement.
A faulty capacitor in the instrument cluster prevents the immobiliser from deactivating. The vehicle cannot be started. Affects Golf Plus models produced 05 to 10/2007.
Sills collect dirt and moisture due to the wheel arch geometry. Rust forms from the inside and is only visible externally once it has broken through. Particularly affects vehicles from 2005–2008. Repair requires welding.
The A/C compressor and its magnetic clutch wear prematurely, especially with infrequently used air conditioning. Certain 2007 vehicles were covered by VW goodwill warranty.
On the Golf Plus 5M, rear brake calipers seize through corroding guide pins and hardened rubber seals. Brake pads wear unevenly and the disc overheats.
The wiring routed between the C-pillar and the tailgate fatigues through repeated opening and closing. Wire breaks cause failures of the lock heating, reversing lights, and rear window heating.
Switches and controls with soft-touch surfaces become sticky and peel after a few years. Particularly affected: window switches, light switch, and multifunction buttons. Parts replacement is the only lasting fix.
Due to the greater weight and raised body of the Golf Plus, front axle control arm bushings and strut mounts wear earlier than on the standard Golf 5. A common TÜV defect.
