VW GTE
The 1.4 TSI CUKB in the Golf VII GTE is the turbocharged petrol part of the plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The 6-speed wet-clutch DSG DQ400e is considerably more robust than the notoriously problematic DQ200. HV battery degradation is the long-term topic; VW provides 8 years warranty for at least 70% residual capacity.
GTE โ green alibi with tax benefits, not a driving experience
Plug-in hybrid for company car tax optimization. Drives like a heavy Passat with electric boost โ because that's exactly what it is. The electric range covers the commute, after that the 1.4 TSI runs alone. Not a sports car, not a classic, a tax instrument.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The 8.7 kWh high-voltage battery measurably loses capacity. Owners report under 6 kWh usable capacity and noticeably shorter charging time after 90,000โ100,000 km. Replacement outside warranty is economically unviable.
Symptoms: Noticeably shorter electric range (under 30 km instead of originally 50 km), faster charging than before, state of health below 80%
Insulation faults in individual cells or short circuits in the electric motor cause sudden system failure. The vehicle shows a red warning, beeps continuously and may shut down completely. Repair only possible at authorised HV workshops.
Symptoms: Red warning 'Error in hybrid system', flashing dashboard, continuous beeping, vehicle can no longer be unlocked or driven
Fault code P0868 'Transmission pressure adaptation at limit' can completely block the transmission. Occurs mainly after incorrectly performed gearbox oil change, when the pressure accumulator reservoir is not correctly filled.
Symptoms: Transmission does not engage any drive gear, vehicle will not move, fault code P0868 in the control unit
Faulty fuse in the high-voltage battery system can create fire and electric shock hazard in the event of a short circuit. Recall KBA No. 011696 affects GTE models of build years 2019โ2022. Fix: insulating mat over junction box.
Faulty sealing of the HV battery housing on some production batches (2014โ2018). Official service action: remove battery, inspect/replace individual cells, reseal new housing.
Symptoms: No direct driving symptoms; VW notifies in writing, possible HV warning in fault memory
Vehicle Weaknesses 12
On the EA288 TDI the coolant pump control slide jams so the switch between small and large coolant circuits is impossible. Known TPI 2041955 has been issued.
Xenon and bi-xenon headlights go milky inside or collect condensation. The cause is defective seals or assembly faults in the headlight housing. Particularly early production 2013โ2015 cars are affected.
Torn speaker rings in the rear doors allow rainwater into the rear footwell. Over-tightened rivets break the speaker frame so the seal can no longer hold.
The rear brake calipers with electric park brake mechanism tend to stick. Pistons jam from corrosion or seal wear, causing one-sided brake wear and overheated discs.
The A/C condenser in front of the radiator corrodes prematurely from stone chips and road salt, leading to refrigerant loss and A/C failure. Early production vehicles are particularly affected.
The 7-speed DSG (DQ200) tends to jerky gear changes with a cold engine, hesitation when pulling away and rough running. VW changed the gearbox oil from synthetic to mineral; on early cars mechatronic failures can occur.
When driving over bumps or compressing, creaking or squeaking noises appear at the front axle. VW issued a TPI with a fix involving greasing the control arm bushings.
Wheel hubs, inner brake disc faces, struts and control arms rust visibly, even though the body corrosion protection is good. Surface rust on chassis parts appears after just a few years.
At higher speeds (above 100 km/h), the electromechanical power steering feels heavier and shows jerky reactions. VW addressed this with a TPI recommending steering rack replacement on affected vehicles.
Plastic panels in the dashboard, door panels and centre console produce creaking and rattling noises. Often affected are the transitions between the dashboard and door panels and the flap actuator motors.
Sachs shock absorbers on the multi-link rear axle (GTI, GTD, R, and versions from approx. 140 hp) lose damper oil prematurely. Loose pistons inside the damper housing cause noise and loss of comfort.
Official TPI (12/2015): Scraping and creaking noises from the strut bearing when steering and compressing on the Golf 7. Cause: ungreased control arm bushings. Re-greasing resolves the issue.
