VW Bora

AGN 1.8L 20V 125 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Sedan 1999–2001
– Be Careful
Engine AGN – Be Careful 2,900–10,030 €

Naturally aspirated with 5 valves per cylinder. Rev-happy character, but oil consumption and valve stem seals can be problematic at high mileage.

Fun Factor? Decent

Agile 1.8 20V

The smooth 1.8 20V offers pleasant refinement and good torque delivery. In the Bora it's fun to rev out without being a true sports car.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Timing belt failure when replacement interval is exceeded

The 1.8 20V AGN uses a timing belt driving the water pump. Exceeding the 180,000 km interval (or 5 years) risks belt failure and total engine damage from valve collision. Tensioner and idler rollers age simultaneously.

Symptoms: No warning on failure β€” sudden engine seizure, refusal to start after water pump overheating

350–700 € from 170,000 km
!! Ignition coil failure (model years 2001–2003)

On the Leon 1M of model years 2001–2003, defective ignition coils are documented. Individual cylinders cut out and the engine runs rough. Replacement parts were temporarily in short supply.

Symptoms: Juddering and misfires at certain rpm, engine warning light, misfires audible

60–250 € from 80,000 km
!! Fuel pump relay faulty

The fuel pump relay (part no. 167) under the steering column is a known failure component on the AGN 8L. Failure generates several seemingly unrelated faults (injectors, camshaft), as the fuel pump does not start.

Symptoms: Engine refuses to start after a long standstill; restart possible after a short pause; multiple fault codes in the ECU without clear cause

20–80 € from 100,000 km
! Mass airflow sensor β€” typical weak point

The mass airflow sensor (MAF) on the AGN engine is a well-known weak point. The sensor becomes contaminated and delivers faulty signals or fails completely. Power loss, dark exhaust and fault codes are the result.

Symptoms: Power loss, dark exhaust on acceleration, fault codes P0100–P0103, increased consumption

80–250 € from 100,000 km
! Hydraulic lifter rattle on cold start

Hydraulic valve lifters on the 1.8 20V rattle on cold start from delayed oil supply. Often caused by blocked oil feed jets or oil pump wear. Noise usually disappears after warm-up.

Symptoms: Loud ticking or tapping on cold start that fades after 1–2 minutes; with a faulty oil pump the noise persists

150–800 € from 100,000 km
! Camshaft adjuster solenoid

The AGN uses a camshaft adjuster (VANOS). The solenoid valve for control wears or clogs with oil deposits. Fault codes for camshaft adjustment without noticeable driveability limitations.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, slight power loss in lower rpm range, occasional load stumble

100–400 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 9

!! Gearbox Gearbox 02K: rivets in differential cage shear

The 02K manual gearbox up to build date 07/2001 has undersized rivets in the differential cage. These shear off, enter the gears, and cause complete economic write-off of the gearbox.

800–2,500 €
!! Other Recall: ABS control unit overheats (build year 2002)

Thermomechanical overload in the ABS control unit can interrupt the earth connection. ABS and ESP drop out. Affects Bora without ASR/ESP, production period around 2002. Software update as remedy.

200–600 €
!! Rust Sills and wheel arches rust from the inside

Sills and wheel arch edges trap moisture and dirt. Rust starts invisibly from the inside and only becomes visible externally when well advanced. Particularly affects neglected examples.

300–1,500 €
!! Body Door lock malfunction with unintended window operation

On the Bora 1J, the door lock switch accidentally triggers all electric windows via the comfort opening function when the key is held in the outer handle. Faulty door locks can also prevent the door being opened from the outside.

80–350 € from 130,000 km
!! HVAC A/C compressor failure / refrigerant loss

On the Bora 1J the A/C compressor and magnetic clutch fail at high mileage. Ageing A/C hoses corrode from the inside; refrigerant escapes and the compressor sustains damage through lack of lubrication.

400–1,200 € from 150,000 km
! Electronics Microswitch: false alarm and interior lighting failure

Faulty microswitches in door locks and handles trigger the alarm for no reason or cause interior lighting to behave incorrectly. Inexpensive wear part but difficult to locate.

30–150 € from 100,000 km
! Suspension Springs and shock absorbers worn prematurely

Suspension springs β€” particularly at the rear β€” break at high mileage. Shock absorbers lose damping from 80,000–120,000 km. Anti-roll bar rubbers and wheel bearings are also typical wear points.

200–600 € from 100,000 km
! Interior Soft-touch interior coating sticky and peeling

The rubber coating on the dashboard, inner door handles, and centre console becomes sticky after 6–10 years and peels off in strips. Only parts replacement permanently eliminates the problem.

50–400 €
! Brakes Handbrake: cable rusts and seizes

Handbrake Bowden cables corrode at the guide sections and seize. Particularly on vehicles that frequently stand outside. Typical problem over 100,000 km.

80–250 € from 120,000 km
