VW Arteon
EA288 with 110 kW in the Tiguan II. Standard diesel, reliable and economical. Watch the AdBlue system.
Reason in upscale clothing
150 hp 2.0 TDI gives the Arteon enough power for effortless driving. The elegant design compensates for the base engine's lack of sportiness.
Engine Weaknesses 11
Defective camshaft oil seal allows engine oil to run onto the timing belt. Oil destroys the belt acceleratedly — belt snap causes immediate total failure.
Symptoms: Oil film on timing belt cover, oil smell, belt noise in advanced cases, oil level dropping
The timing belt is not maintenance-free despite earlier marketing claims. Recommended replacement every 120,000–150,000 km. If it snaps: immediate engine failure with valve contact.
Symptoms: No warning on snap — sudden engine shutdown
Turbo bearings wear prematurely with neglected maintenance or poor oil quality. Do not switch off engine immediately after a drive — turbo needs to cool down.
Symptoms: Whistling or grinding noise from turbo area, blue exhaust cloud, power loss, oil in charge air hose
The EGR cooler develops cracks and leaks, allowing coolant into the exhaust stream. The resulting viscous sludge blocks EGR lines and valve; removal requires dismantling the DPF, driveshaft and wishbone.
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust, coolant loss without visible external leak, rough idle, fault codes in EGR path
The DFGA in the Tarraco shows the EA288-typical EGR issue from 100,000 km. As a high-rider SUV the Tarraco is frequently driven with load and trailer, increasing EGR stress.
Symptoms: Rough idle P0401, MIL, reduced power, occasional black smoke
EGR valve and cooler tend to heavy coking, especially with frequent short-trip use. Causes rough idle and power loss through to Limp Mode.
Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss, stumbling when accelerating, increased consumption, MIL
DPF clogs with short-trip use as regeneration cannot complete. Professional cleaning or replacement required.
Symptoms: DPF warning in instrument cluster, power loss, increased consumption, engine enters Limp Mode
Soot deposits block the EGR valve, causing stumbling at low rpm, power loss and rough idle. Secondary damage to DPF and turbocharger possible if not addressed promptly.
Symptoms: Engine stumbles in lower rev range, noticeable power loss when accelerating, rough idle, occasional fault codes P0401/P0402
With predominantly short-trip use, the engine rarely reaches the operating temperature needed for DPF regeneration. The filter progressively clogs, causing power drops and ultimately Limp Mode.
Symptoms: Warning light 'clean particulate filter', significant power loss under load, increased fuel consumption, engine enters Limp Mode
The AdBlue injector (dosing unit) clogs with urea crystals or fails electrically. The SCR system malfunctions, fault codes are set and after a countdown the engine cannot be started.
Symptoms: Warning message 'AdBlue: range X km', MIL, after countdown expires engine start refused
The DSG in the Tarraco with DFGA shows hesitant pull-away due to emissions regulations. The transition from standstill feels sluggish. Software update from the dealer can improve behaviour.
Symptoms: Delayed pull-away, judder when accelerating from rest, DSG shifts roughly in city traffic
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
Manufacturing defect in August 2017: rear wheel bearing housings not correctly hardened. In the worst case the wheel carrier can fracture, causing complete loss of wheel guidance. VW replaces both rear wheel bearing housings.
The input rod between the electric brake booster and the brake pedal can come loose. Possible complete loss of braking, with only emergency braking function remaining. Affects model years 2019–2021.
Heavy stop-and-go use and towing lead to excessive clutch wear in the DSG. Juddering on take-off (especially when cold) and delayed gear changes are typical signs.
On 4Motion variants, a missed Haldex oil change leads to pump wear and overheating of the multi-plate clutch. Without an oil change every 40,000–60,000 km, AWD failure and differential damage are at risk.
The A/C condenser is mounted unprotected behind the front bumper and is highly vulnerable to stone chips. Even small stones can create hairline cracks or holes leading to complete refrigerant loss. Repair cost: 700–900 €.
On the Arteon 3H, the electromechanical steering rack produces clicking or creaking noises when turning, particularly at low speed. Sporadically the electronic steering warning light illuminates.
Dampers and suspension springs show wear similar to the related Passat B8. The rubber coating on the coil springs can crack and cause grinding or knocking noises. Strut mount: 180–400 € per axle.
Early build years show malfunctions in the traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, and online services (App-Connect, Car-Net). Software updates resolve many cases; some control units require replacement.
Brake discs develop visible rust through the wheel spokes during extended standing — a known VW Group phenomenon. Not a safety issue but visually off-putting, and shows up early on used car inspections.
