Volvo V50
Naturally-aspirated petrol engine from the Ford-Volvo platform partnership on the P1 platform, identical to Ford Focus units. Simple construction with timing belt, inexpensive to maintain. Moderate output for urban use.
For economy-minded buyers only
1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine from the Ford family. Least out of place in the C30, but always a harmless base unit.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The B4164S3 has no hydraulic valve lash adjusters — valves must be adjusted every 100,000 km. As an interference engine, a broken timing belt immediately destroys the cylinder head.
Symptoms: Ticking noise at high mileage, sudden engine stop on belt failure
When coolant pH drops below 7.0 it becomes acidic and corrodes metal components. Thermostat and cooling system are affected. Regular coolant changes per manufacturer specification protect the engine.
Symptoms: Overheating in city traffic, low coolant system pressure, engine temperature fluctuates or climbs permanently.
Typical problem of the P1-platform four-cylinder: the front camshaft seals start leaking oil from around 130,000 km, which runs into the belt cover. Always replace during a timing belt change.
Symptoms: Oil in the timing belt area, slight oil film at the front underside of the engine
The Ford-Volvo 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine on the P1 platform tends towards rough idle from a dirty or defective electronic throttle body. Basic throttle relearn and cleaning usually resolves the issue without replacement.
Symptoms: Rough idle when warm, fluctuating idle speed, occasional stalling.
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Springs break on the front and rear axles of the S40 II, V50 and C30 comparatively often, as MOT inspectors regularly find. The repair is straightforward but not cheap.
Alternator and starter motor fail relatively early on models built before 2005. Sudden power cuts or starting problems are typical symptoms. Replacement costs €400–700.
Door locking motors fail and produce metallic noises when closing. All doors can be affected; repair costs around €200 per door.
The thermostat is prone to malfunction and can cause excessively high or low operating temperatures. Coolant loss without a visible leak point to early cylinder head issues.
The A/C condenser is THE main weak point of the S40 II/V50/C30. Microcracks cause refrigerant loss that puts the air conditioning completely out of service. Repair costs around €800.
The audio and navigation system on the S40 II/V50/C30 fails due to cold solder joints in the control unit. A replacement unit costs at least €650; cheaper repairs by re-soldering are possible.
T-Tech and black leather seats tear or show abrasion wear typically from 40,000 km. The driver's seat is most affected; tears widen markedly by 100,000 km.
