The EX90 suffered from severe software problems at launch: infotainment screens went black, digital keys failed, the A/C cut out, and vehicles lost drive power on the motorway. Root cause: incompatible ECU software from different suppliers.

NHTSA recall for 2025 EX90: bolts on the freestanding second-row seats may not have been correctly tightened. Increased injury risk in a collision. Repair free of charge at the dealer.
Symptoms: Seat wobbles under heavy braking or in corners. Often not visible externally.
Like the XC40 Recharge and EX30, the EX90 carries the 12V drain risk during standing periods without a charging connection. Many active control units draw standby current even at rest by design.

The EX90 was delivered with a delayed market start due to software immaturity. Early owners report missing functions that were added later via OTA. Very little long-term reliability data available.

Some EX90s were delivered with a defective component in the charging system and could not charge at all. Volvo replaced affected units; check recall status.
Consumer Reports and forum members document a major system failure: climate control, audio and all operating functions fail simultaneously. In some cases the EX90 takes minutes to become driveable again. The cause lies in the central vehicle computer.
On some EX90s the airbag warning light illuminates permanently. Vehicles were delivered with open recalls in some cases. The fault requires diagnostics and a software reset at the dealership but can return after updates on individual vehicles.
The EX90 was delivered with unfinished software. Infotainment screens flicker or display error messages; Apple CarPlay and Smart Charging were missing at market launch.
Walk-Away Locking and the digital key function show repeated malfunctions. Some owners report complete failure of the digital access control; physical key required as backup.

The EX90's central computer remains active for up to 72 hours and drains approximately 3% of battery capacity per day while parked. Volvo states this is by design, as a cold start takes 8 seconds.
