Volvo T5
Five-cylinder turbocharged engine with 220 hp for the compact Volvo models. Predecessor of the B5254T7 in S40/V50/C30. Powerful engine, but check PCV system and turbocharger regularly.
Five-cylinder sound in a small car
220 hp and the unmistakable Volvo five-cylinder sound — quick and characterful, but more cruiser than circuit tool.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Interference engine with timing belt drive. Replacement interval 120,000 km or 8 years. Check VVT camshaft seals regularly — leaks contaminate the timing belt with oil.
Symptoms: No warning before timing belt breaks — immediate engine stall and valve damage.
The angle gear of the P1 AWD system is prone to oil leaks and bearing wear. A broken angle gear shaft silently disables four-wheel drive. Replacement units cost approximately €1,200–1,800 plus fitting.
Symptoms: Humming noise like a wheel bearing from about 30–50 km/h, vibrations, clunking on gear changes, vehicle suddenly drives front-wheel drive only with no warning light.
Like all Volvo five-cylinders, the PCV system clogs with sludge. Cracked PCV hoses and a blocked separator cause crankcase overpressure which forces oil past camshaft seals.
Symptoms: Oil in spark plug wells, oil film on valve cover, whistling noise under load, increased oil consumption.
The wastegate actuator on the TD04HL turbocharger loses spring force over time. A leaking or weak diaphragm can no longer keep the wastegate sufficiently closed. Replacement is labour-intensive as heat shields are difficult to access.
Symptoms: Rattling noise from turbo, boost pressure fluctuates or drops, in severe cases uncontrolled boost creep with protective corrections from the ECU.
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Springs break on the front and rear axles of the S40 II, V50 and C30 comparatively often, as MOT inspectors regularly find. The repair is straightforward but not cheap.
Alternator and starter motor fail relatively early on models built before 2005. Sudden power cuts or starting problems are typical symptoms. Replacement costs €400–700.
Door locking motors fail and produce metallic noises when closing. All doors can be affected; repair costs around €200 per door.
The thermostat is prone to malfunction and can cause excessively high or low operating temperatures. Coolant loss without a visible leak point to early cylinder head issues.
The A/C condenser is THE main weak point of the S40 II/V50/C30. Microcracks cause refrigerant loss that puts the air conditioning completely out of service. Repair costs around €800.
The audio and navigation system on the S40 II/V50/C30 fails due to cold solder joints in the control unit. A replacement unit costs at least €650; cheaper repairs by re-soldering are possible.
T-Tech and black leather seats tear or show abrasion wear typically from 40,000 km. The driver's seat is most affected; tears widen markedly by 100,000 km.
