โ€“ Be Careful
Engine D5204T5 โ€“ Be Careful 4,150โ€“11,450 $

Four-cylinder turbodiesel with 2.0 litres from the joint Ford-Volvo development for the P1 platform. Common-rail at 1,800 bar and Euro 5 standard. Service-friendly construction; check the particulate filter with predominantly urban driving profiles.

Fun Factor? Decent

VEA diesel in the compact

100 kW D3 for the P1 compacts: economical and adequate. City-capable, but no long-distance runner.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! EGR cooler soot-clogged โ€” VEA diesel problem

The D5204 engines are VEA successor engines with an identical EGR cooler problem. Soot paste in the EGR system leads to throttling. The 2020 recall also applies to vehicles with D5204 engines.

Symptoms: EGR fault light, engine throttling, rough running, increased fuel consumption

500โ€“1,500 $ from 60,000 km
!! Serpentine belt must not reach timing belt โ€” total loss risk

On the D5204T5, a breaking serpentine belt can be drawn into the timing belt drive and destroy the timing belt โ€” with immediate engine damage. Inspect timing belt and serpentine belt condition together at every service. Timing belt replacement interval: 105,000 km.

Symptoms: Loud clattering or scraping, sudden engine stall, noise from belt area.

450โ€“800 $ from 105,000 km
!! DPF clogging with short-trip use

The VEA successor D5204 has the same DPF vulnerability with short-trip use. Regular long-distance runs for active regeneration are necessary. DPF cleaning or replacement from 150,000 km.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, power loss, increased diesel consumption

800โ€“3,000 $ from 150,000 km
!! High-pressure injectors leak and contaminate oil

The 1,800-bar common-rail injectors of the D5204T5 can leak at over 150,000 km mileage. Excessive return flow causes diesel in the engine oil, diluting it and accelerating bearing wear. Hydraulic tappets can start knocking from as early as 100,000 km with poor oil quality.

Symptoms: Rough idle, diesel smell from the dipstick opening, tapping from valve train on cold start.

400โ€“1,800 $ from 150,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Suspension Spring breakage front and rear axle

Springs break on the front and rear axles of the S40 II, V50 and C30 comparatively often, as MOT inspectors regularly find. The repair is straightforward but not cheap.

200โ€“500 $ from 100,000 km
!! Electronics Premature alternator and starter failure

Alternator and starter motor fail relatively early on models built before 2005. Sudden power cuts or starting problems are typical symptoms. Replacement costs โ‚ฌ400โ€“700.

400โ€“700 $ from 120,000 km
!! Electronics Faulty door lock (deadlock mechanism)

Door locking motors fail and produce metallic noises when closing. All doors can be affected; repair costs around โ‚ฌ200 per door.

150โ€“300 $ from 90,000 km
!! Cooling Sticking thermostat / coolant loss

The thermostat is prone to malfunction and can cause excessively high or low operating temperatures. Coolant loss without a visible leak point to early cylinder head issues.

200โ€“500 $ from 110,000 km
! HVAC A/C condenser โ€” the biggest weak point of the model range

The A/C condenser is THE main weak point of the S40 II/V50/C30. Microcracks cause refrigerant loss that puts the air conditioning completely out of service. Repair costs around โ‚ฌ800.

600โ€“1,000 $ from 90,000 km
! Electronics Radio/navigation fails due to cold solder joints

The audio and navigation system on the S40 II/V50/C30 fails due to cold solder joints in the control unit. A replacement unit costs at least โ‚ฌ650; cheaper repairs by re-soldering are possible.

300โ€“750 $ from 120,000 km
! Interior Premature seat upholstery wear (T-Tech / leather)

T-Tech and black leather seats tear or show abrasion wear typically from 40,000 km. The driver's seat is most affected; tears widen markedly by 100,000 km.

150โ€“600 $ from 60,000 km
