Volvo C30

D4162T 1.6L DRIVe 114 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2010โ€“2013
โ€“ Be Careful
Engine D4162T โ€“ Be Careful 4,900โ€“14,450 $

Ford four-cylinder turbodiesel with 1.6 litres marketed as the Volvo DRIVe version. SOHC with timing belt and Euro 5 standard. Very economical; conceived for high-mileage drivers with an efficiency focus.

Fun Factor? Decent

Economical in a sporty suit

C30 with D2: pretty shell, quiet diesel. The C30 T5 is the real fun proposition.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! Timing belt โ€” interval shortened to 140,000 km in 2014

The original 240,000 km (150,000-mile) replacement interval of the PSA-derived DV6 was reduced to 140,000 km (87,500 miles) in 2014. Older vehicles maintained on the original interval carry elevated risk.

Symptoms: Sudden engine failure without warning, engine damage on belt snap

400โ€“800 $ from 140,000 km
!! Engine block can crack on overheating

The D4162T engine block can crack during overheating events (e.g. from untreated coolant loss). Reports of cracked blocks following coolant starvation are documented in English-language Volvo forums.

Symptoms: Coolant loss following overheating, engine noises, white smoke, engine oil in coolant

2,000โ€“6,000 $ from 150,000 km
!! Diesel particulate filter clogs with short-trip use

The DPF of the PSA DV6/D4162T requires motorway runs for regeneration. With predominantly urban use the filter clogs quickly. An interrupted regeneration cycle (e.g. from engine stall) accelerates clogging.

Symptoms: DPF warning light early after purchase, power reduction, increased fuel consumption, soot smell when parking

300โ€“2,500 $ from 100,000 km
!! Injector seals leaking โ€” cylinder 3 most affected

On the PSA-derived DV6 diesel, the injector copper seals at the cylinder head interface tend to leak. Cylinder 3 is statistically the most commonly affected; exhaust residues seep out along the outside of the injector.

Symptoms: Soot deposits on outside of injectors, rough running, poor cold-start behaviour

200โ€“800 $ from 120,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Suspension Spring breakage front and rear axle

Springs break on the front and rear axles of the S40 II, V50 and C30 comparatively often, as MOT inspectors regularly find. The repair is straightforward but not cheap.

200โ€“500 $ from 100,000 km
!! Electronics Premature alternator and starter failure

Alternator and starter motor fail relatively early on models built before 2005. Sudden power cuts or starting problems are typical symptoms. Replacement costs โ‚ฌ400โ€“700.

400โ€“700 $ from 120,000 km
!! Electronics Faulty door lock (deadlock mechanism)

Door locking motors fail and produce metallic noises when closing. All doors can be affected; repair costs around โ‚ฌ200 per door.

150โ€“300 $ from 90,000 km
!! Cooling Sticking thermostat / coolant loss

The thermostat is prone to malfunction and can cause excessively high or low operating temperatures. Coolant loss without a visible leak point to early cylinder head issues.

200โ€“500 $ from 110,000 km
! HVAC A/C condenser โ€” the biggest weak point of the model range

The A/C condenser is THE main weak point of the S40 II/V50/C30. Microcracks cause refrigerant loss that puts the air conditioning completely out of service. Repair costs around โ‚ฌ800.

600โ€“1,000 $ from 90,000 km
! Electronics Radio/navigation fails due to cold solder joints

The audio and navigation system on the S40 II/V50/C30 fails due to cold solder joints in the control unit. A replacement unit costs at least โ‚ฌ650; cheaper repairs by re-soldering are possible.

300โ€“750 $ from 120,000 km
! Interior Premature seat upholstery wear (T-Tech / leather)

T-Tech and black leather seats tear or show abrasion wear typically from 40,000 km. The driver's seat is most affected; tears widen markedly by 100,000 km.

150โ€“600 $ from 60,000 km
