Toyota Verso

1WW 1.6L D-4D 112 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Van 2014–2018
– Be Careful
Engine 1WW – Be Careful 5,170–19,100 $

BMW-derived diesel (N47 basis), not developed by Toyota itself. Timing chain on the gearbox side — access for inspection is involved. Timing chain elongation possible at high mileage — atypical by Toyota standards.

Fun Factor? Not Really

BMW diesel in the family van

82 kW 1.6 D-4D — underpowered for the heavy Verso. Loud when pushed hard, no driving fun.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! EGR condensation water damages throttle body and engine

Condensation water from the EGR system enters the throttle body and can cause engine stumbling, power loss, and in extreme cases engine failure.

Symptoms: Engine stumbling and hesitation; power drops; in extreme cases engine stall on the road

500–2,500 $ from 80,000 km
!! Recall: Fire risk due to faulty EGR

Toyota Verso models with the 1.6 D-4D from 2015–2018 have an elevated fire risk due to a faulty exhaust gas recirculation system. Dealers and workshops were called upon to inspect affected vehicles.

Symptoms: No driver warning before fire risk occurs; possible smoke developing under the bonnet

!! Premature timing chain failure possible

Isolated cases of timing chain failure have been reported on the N47-based 1WW at as little as 84,000 km. The N47 timing chain issue is well known from the parent engine used in BMW.

Symptoms: Sudden engine noise; engine stalls without warning; engine damage from valve-piston contact

2,000–6,000 $ from 100,000 km
!! Intake valve carbon build-up from direct injection

The 1WW has direct injection only, with no port injection. Intake valves are not cleaned by fuel and carbon builds up from around 40,000 km. Toyota covers cleaning as a goodwill measure.

Symptoms: Power loss, rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, increased consumption, MIL light with heavy build-up.

300–800 $ from 50,000 km
!! Ignition coils fail due to software fault

Early 1WW engines (up to model year 2018) had a faulty engine management system that damaged ignition coils through incorrect actuation during start-stop operation. Toyota issued a software update and replacement coils as a remedy.

Symptoms: Misfires on individual cylinders, engine stumble, limp mode, fault code P030x (cylinder x misfire).

150–400 $ from 60,000 km
!! DPF regeneration overloads cooling system

The 1WW (BMW diesel) in the Auris/Verso shows problems with active DPF regeneration during frequent short trips, according to auris-forum.de. The cooling system gets overloaded during regeneration and elevated coolant temperatures can occur.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, elevated coolant temperature during regeneration, sudden spike in fuel consumption

300–1,500 $ from 80,000 km
!! Oil leak from engine block

Oil loss on the 1WW 1.6 D-4D in the Verso is documented in toyota-forum.de. Various gaskets on the BMW diesel engine block can develop leaks and cause oil loss.

Symptoms: Oil spots under the car, dropping oil level, oil smell in the engine bay

200–800 $ from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 10

!! Other Recall: throttle pedal sticks at wide-open position

On Verso AR20 vehicles produced between February 2009 and January 2010 the throttle pedal can stick.

0–0 $
!! Rust Widespread rust issues

The Verso AR20 shows rust in various areas: starter motor, sills, lower door edges.

200–1,500 $
!! Other EGR valve coked up (diesel)

On the 1.6D and 2.2D-CAT the EGR valve is prone to heavy soot deposits and coking. When blocked the car enters limp mode. Cleaning approx. €200, new part with fitting approx. €1,200.

200–1,200 $ from 100,000 km
!! Other Timing chain rattles

The timing chain on the Verso can stretch with high mileage and rattle on cold starts. Caught early the damage is limited to the tensioner and guides; left unaddressed engine damage is likely.

400–1,200 $ from 150,000 km
!! Brakes Rear brake calipers seized

Due to the regenerative braking system the rear brakes on the Verso see little mechanical use. Brake pistons and guide pins can seize, leading to uneven wear.

200–600 $ from 80,000 km
!! Steering Steering rack with excessive play

The steering rack on the Verso AR20 develops excessive play with increasing mileage. Independent workshops often recommend a full replacement before the MOT. Dealer cost approx. €1,200; part number 45510-0F010.

400–1,200 $ from 100,000 km
! Electronics Lighting frequently flagged at MOT

According to TÜV reports the Verso AR20 fails on lighting defects at an above-average rate.

50–300 $
! HVAC Blower motor fails

The cabin blower motor (Denso unit behind the glovebox) fails or suddenly drops to minimum output. The cause is usually a motor shutting down due to overload or a faulty resistor. Can be repaired by swapping the motor.

70–300 $ from 120,000 km
! Interior Third-row seat — folding mechanism jams

The third-row seat folding mechanism on the Verso is prone to malfunctions. The mechanism can become stiff or jam. Vehicles with frequent third-row use are affected earlier.

100–400 $ from 80,000 km
! Body Door seals porous — wind noise

Door seals can become porous with age and cause wind noise. On vehicles without regular rubber care service this occurs earlier.

100–400 $ from 100,000 km
