Toyota Tundra
Toyota's legendary 4.7L V8 — documented past 1 million miles. Timing belt (not chain!) every 90k miles mandatory, interference engine. Replace water pump with timing belt. Exhaust manifold cracks due to catalytic converter proximity for emissions compliance — OEM replacement has the same flaw, prefer aftermarket headers. Air injection pump on 2005+ can get expensive (bypass kit available). The base design is virtually indestructible — the most famous longevity powertrain in the truck segment.
4.7 V8 — Toyota's legendary workhorse
282 hp V8 with timing belt (replacement every 90k miles mandatory!). Documented lifespans exceeding 1 million miles. The engine is a legend — the frame on salt belt vehicles is not.
Engine Weaknesses 7
The 2UZ-FE is an interference engine with a timing belt. If the belt snaps, pistons contact valves and cause catastrophic engine failure. The replacement interval of around 145,000 km is frequently overlooked by used car buyers.
Symptoms: Rarely any warning before failure. An ageing belt shows cracking or fraying on the edges. On failure: immediate engine shutdown, metallic banging
The 100-Series Land Cruiser with 2UZ-FE has two T-shaped plastic heater hose connectors. These embrittle with age and can suddenly burst, causing immediate massive coolant loss and engine overheating.
Symptoms: Sudden coolant loss, temperature gauge pegging, steam from the engine bay, coolant puddle under the vehicle
The water pump on the 2UZ-FE is belt-driven. Since removing the timing belt requires substantial effort, the water pump should always be replaced together with the belt.
Symptoms: Coolant dripping in the engine bay, whining or squealing from the engine bay (bearing failure), rising temperature, coolant loss without visible external leak
The 2UZ-FE has a dedicated ignition coil per cylinder. Sporadic coil failures become more frequent with age. The V8 configuration with 8 coils statistically increases the likelihood of a failure.
Symptoms: Stumbling or misfires under load, noticeably rough engine, fault codes for individual cylinder misfires, power loss
The starter motor on the 2UZ-FE is mounted beneath the intake manifold and is only accessible after removing it. Replacement is therefore very labour-intensive.
Symptoms: Engine cranks slowly or not at all, clicking on start attempt, starter motor completely non-responsive
On vehicles with over 200,000 km oil leaks from the valve cover gaskets are common on this V8. The V8 configuration with two cylinder heads means two gaskets are involved, doubling the workload.
Symptoms: Oil smell from the engine bay after a run, oil drops on exhaust manifolds (smoke), visible oil film on the sides of the cylinder heads
With increasing age the MAF sensor on the 2UZ-FE becomes contaminated and delivers incorrect readings. This leads to suboptimal fuelling and increased consumption.
Symptoms: Stumbling on pull-away, poor throttle response, slight hesitation in the lower rev range, elevated fuel consumption
Vehicle Weaknesses 3
Same C-channel frame construction as later generations. No official settlement for 1st Gen, but same rust susceptibility in salt regions.
Front lower ball joints wear, especially with off-road use or heavy loads.
Rear drum brakes undersized for a full-size truck.
