Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid
Plug-in hybrid version of the 2.5 Dynamic Force in the RAV4. Electric range approx. 75 km, system output 225 kW. Ideal for commuters with short daily trips and occasional long-distance driving. No known weaknesses so far.
Plug-in RAV4 surprises
225 kW system output — instant electric shove makes the RAV4 the quickest SUV in its class. On short runs, basically an EV.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The high-voltage cable between the traction battery and rear axle motor on the RAV4 PHEV (XA50, build years 2019–2022) is insufficiently protected against corrosion. Toyota extended the warranty to 8 years/160,000 km.
Symptoms: Hybrid system warning light, rear axle drops out (all-wheel drive interrupted), vehicle enters limp mode
Certain 2021/2022 RAV4 Prime vehicles were delivered with a damaged rectifier module in the DC-DC converter. A short circuit can occur at ambient temperatures below 5 °C.
Symptoms: Charging process aborts, charging system warning, vehicle can no longer be charged
The PHEV variant of the A25A-FXS also tends to EGR clogging. Due to the combustion engine running only briefly in PHEV mode, deposits can actually build up faster than in a standard hybrid.
Symptoms: Power loss in combustion engine mode; low coolant level; fault messages
The electric coolant pump on the A25A-FXS can leak at the pump housing or electrical connector. TSB T-TT-0614-20 documents coolant loss and MIL activation on 2020 build year vehicles. Overheating endangers the inverter and drive electronics.
Symptoms: Coolant smell, check engine light, temperature rise; occasionally visible coolant puddle under the vehicle
On RAV4 Prime variants with the A25A-FXS-PHEV, fuel leaks caused by corrosion at the high-pressure pump seal have been documented. Toyota often handles cases as goodwill when a documented service history is present.
Symptoms: Fuel smell at the bonnet, visible moisture traces around the injection pump
In PHEV mode the A25A-FXS-PHEV combustion engine often runs only briefly. Frequent cold starts without adequate warm-up put disproportionate stress on the chain tensioner and oil supply.
Symptoms: Slight rattle on cold start, check engine light for camshaft phasing error
Vehicle Weaknesses 18
Some RAV4 XA50 vehicles were recalled due to a defect in the brake booster pump.
Insufficiently tightened bolts on the front control arms can come loose. Official recall.
The electric parking brake sporadically fails to release correctly or activates unexpectedly.
The DCM module does not fully enter sleep mode when the vehicle is at rest, causing parasitic current draw. The battery can be completely discharged after 7–10 days of standing.
Moisture, dirt or road salt can penetrate the HV underfloor cable connector and cause corrosion. Toyota fitted updated covers on later build years.

Some RAV4 XA50 vehicles from model years 2018–2019 were recalled due to a faulty eCall system.
The electric parking brake can show sporadic malfunctions.
LED modules in the rear indicators partially fail because solder joints crack from vibration.
With predominantly hybrid operation the mechanical brakes are rarely used, leading to surface rust on brake discs and seized brake calipers.

Turning to full lock while simultaneously rolling over a small edge produces a clicking noise from the steering linkage. Toyota dealers frequently classify this as normal.
Vehicle occupants report above-average tyre and wind noise at motorway speeds. A known criticism in the segment, but not a defect.
After 40,000–50,000 km owners report increasing rattles from the interior, especially from the dashboard and door panels on rough roads.
