Toyota 4.0 V6

1GR-FE 4.0L V6 249 hp Automatic All-wheel drive SUV 2002–2009
– Be Careful
Engine 1GR-FE – Be Careful 9,920–33,900 €

One of the most reliable V6 engines ever made β€” used in 4Runner, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado. 400,000+ mile lifespans documented. Exhaust manifold cracking on early versions (pre-2010) is universal β€” aftermarket headers instead of OEM replacement. Secondary Air Injection (SAIS) on 2010-2013 California emissions fails frequently, bypass kit as permanent fix. Water pump sits inside the timing cover β€” replacement requires full timing chain work. Basic maintenance (oil, coolant) is enough for extreme longevity.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Strong V6 for off-road

The 4.0 V6 gives the Prado serious grunt. Revvy and strong β€” equally enjoyable on road and off-road.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Head gasket failure at high mileage

Head gasket failure has been documented on 1GR-FE engines with over 200,000–250,000 km. Vehicles that suffered overheating due to water pump failure are particularly at risk.

Symptoms: White smoke from the exhaust, coolant loss, oil-coolant emulsion under the oil cap, power loss, hard starting

1,500–4,000 € from 230,000 km
!! Thin cylinder liners cannot be bored out

The 1GR-FE has cast-in, very thin cylinder liners that cannot be bored out if the cylinder walls are damaged. A damaged engine block requires a complete block replacement.

Symptoms: Knocking, pressure loss in the affected cylinder, oil consumption from damaged bore surface, measurably lower compression

3,000–7,000 € from 300,000 km
!! Water pump fails prematurely at 65,000–80,000 km

The water pump on the 1GR-FE has a relatively short service life of around 65,000–80,000 km. Early VVT-i versions (2003–2009) are particularly affected. Failure can lead to overheating and head gasket damage.

Symptoms: Coolant loss with no visible external leak, overheating tendency under load or in traffic, squealing from the engine bay, white steam

400–900 € from 70,000 km
!! Timing chain rattle on cold start

The 1GR-FE has three timing chains. At high mileages and with irregular oil changes the chain tensioners and guides can wear, causing cold-start rattle.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling or clattering immediately after cold start, usually fades as the engine warms up, fault codes for camshaft position (P0016)

800–2,200 € from 200,000 km
!! VVT-i system sensitive to oil pressure and quality

The VVT-i system on the 1GR-FE requires precise oil pressure for camshaft adjustment. Oil changed too infrequently or with incorrect viscosity can disrupt the system.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, sluggish response at low revs, fault codes P0010/P0012, increased fuel consumption

200–700 € from 150,000 km
! Ignition coil failure on early VVT-i models

1GR-FE versions up to 2009 (single VVT-i) are known for ignition coil failures. From 2009 Toyota switched to iridium spark plugs and the dual VVT-i system, which largely resolved the issue.

Symptoms: Hesitation and misfires under load, noticeable cylinder misfires, fault codes for individual cylinders, rough running

200–700 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 12

!! Other Denso Injectors Wear Out

Denso injectors in the D-4D diesel engines can fail between 100,000–200,000 km. Replacement per injector approximately €1,600–1,800. Short-trip driving and fuel quality affect service life.

800–3,600 € from 150,000 km

Denso injectors in the D-4D diesel engines can fail between 100,000–200,000 km. Replacement per injector approximately €1,600–1,800. Short-trip driving and fuel quality affect service life.

800–3,600 € from 150,000 km
!! Rust Rust at Body Seams and Underbody

Around 28% of vehicles suffer from premature rust at body seams and underbody joints.

300–2,000 €
!! Gearbox Automatic Gearbox: Shift Problems from 150,000 km

The 5-speed automatic develops valve body problems between 150,000 and 200,000 km.

500–2,000 € from 170,000 km
!! Brakes Brake Calipers Seized

Brake calipers tend to seize through corrosion, particularly at the rear axle.

400–1,200 € from 120,000 km
!! Suspension Suspension Wear After Off-Road Use

On vehicles used extensively off-road, shock absorbers, control arms and springs wear considerably faster.

400–1,500 € from 150,000 km
!! Brakes Rear Brake Caliper Seized

Rear brake calipers seize through moisture and salt. Pistons can no longer move, leading to uneven brake pad wear. Repair at a dealer costs approximately €400 per caliper.

150–800 € from 130,000 km

Rear brake calipers seize through moisture and salt. Pistons can no longer move, leading to uneven brake pad wear. Repair at a dealer costs approximately €400 per caliper.

150–800 € from 130,000 km
! Gearbox Torque Converter Lock-Up Engages Incorrectly

At around 165,000 km the 4-speed automatic shows problems with the torque converter lock-up clutch: engaging too early at too low an rpm, especially under load or when towing.

100–1,200 € from 160,000 km
! Suspension Front Anti-Roll Bar Bushes Wear Out

Front anti-roll bar bushes wear with off-road use and higher mileage. Typical noise when turning and on uneven roads. Cheap parts, labour-intensive to remove.

60–250 € from 100,000 km
