Toyota Corolla
Solid small engine with a timing chain instead of a belt. Known issue is elevated oil consumption through weak piston rings, particularly on pre-2002 examples. Regular oil level checks are mandatory.
Saloon with a power deficit
The heavier saloon needs more than 71 kW. Every hill becomes a struggle.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The cylinder block is extremely sensitive to overheating. Re-boring is not permitted by the manufacturer โ if the block warps, engine replacement is the only option.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature gauge in the red, coolant loss, engine shutdown via thermal protection
Worn oil scraper rings lead to oil consumption of up to 1 litre per 1,000 km, mainly on pre-2002 build years. Left unchecked, this can damage the catalytic converter.
Symptoms: Low oil level between changes, bluish smoke when blipping the throttle after standing, oil smell in the cabin
After approximately 150,000 km the timing chain may stretch and produce a dull knocking noise. The chain tensioner can also fail independently and must then be replaced separately.
Symptoms: Dull rattling on cold start that fades after warm-up; engine management faults in the fault memory
On the 4ZZ-FE the camshaft can seize if oil supply is inadequate or oil changes are overdue. Well-known issue on the 3ZZ-FE/4ZZ-FE engine block.
Symptoms: Ticking noise from the valvetrain, power loss, elevated oil consumption
The chain tensioner on the 4ZZ-FE is known to seep and lose oil at its seal area. The seal and O-ring on the tensioner piston wear out and need replacing.
Symptoms: Oil spots at the front of the engine, dropping oil level without any smoke
Ignition coil failures are a frequently discussed topic for the 4ZZ-FE. Faulty coils cause misfires and the engine running on three cylinders.
Symptoms: Engine stumbling or running on three cylinders, engine warning light flashing, misfires especially in damp conditions
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The rubber bushings of the front wishbones wear from around 100,000 km. Wear is accelerated on poor road surfaces.
The power steering rack develops leaks at the gaiters. Oil loss leads to heavy steering.
On older Corolla E120 vehicles rust appears primarily at the rear wheel arches and lower door edges.
The rear brakes tend to seize, particularly when heavy braking is rare.
Starter battery problems are among the most common breakdown issues.
The thermostat can stick partially open, leaving the engine slow to reach operating temperature.
The AC compressor magnetic clutch fails, and the compressor can no longer be engaged.
