Toyota Corolla
Solid four-cylinder with VVT-i from the ZZ series. Proven and long-lived, timing chain. Adequate power for the Corolla E120. Monitor oil consumption at high mileage.
Solid saloon
81 kW in the E120 notchback β adequate for everyday use, without any particular character. Reliable in true Toyota fashion.
Engine Weaknesses 6
With neglected oil changes or low oil level the camshafts can seize. Once a camshaft has seized, all lubricated bearing components are destroyed.
Symptoms: Metallic knocking and grinding from the valvetrain; engine power loss; in worst case engine seizure
The timing chain on the 3ZZ-FE elongates at high mileage and generates rattling noises. Chain tensioner and guide rails should be replaced together.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start; metallic noise from the timing cover area
Like all ZZ engines the 3ZZ-FE occasionally shows the well-known short-block problem at high mileage: worn piston rings push oil consumption above 0.5 litres per 1,000 km.
Symptoms: Oil level noticeably dropping between changes; blue smoke after overrun or on cold start
The 3ZZ-FE tends to have the thermostat stick in either the open or closed position. A rusty bypass line at the rear of the engine can also cause coolant loss.
Symptoms: Engine not reaching operating temperature (thermostat stuck open) or overheating (stuck closed), dropping coolant level
A known ZZ-family problem: the chain tensioner gasket ages and begins to weep. Oil drips from the timing cover area onto the underbody.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle at the front; dropping oil level without visible exhaust smoke
The 3ZZ-FE generates fault code P0133 (sluggish lambda sensor signal). The cause is often not just the sensor itself but also the exhaust system or fuel system.
Symptoms: Engine warning light, elevated fuel consumption, failed emissions test
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The rubber bushings of the front wishbones wear from around 100,000 km. Wear is accelerated on poor road surfaces.
The power steering rack develops leaks at the gaiters. Oil loss leads to heavy steering.
On older Corolla E120 vehicles rust appears primarily at the rear wheel arches and lower door edges.
The rear brakes tend to seize, particularly when heavy braking is rare.
Starter battery problems are among the most common breakdown issues.
The thermostat can stick partially open, leaving the engine slow to reach operating temperature.
The AC compressor magnetic clutch fails, and the compressor can no longer be engaged.
