Toyota Avensis
Evolution of the 1CD-FTV with a timing chain instead of a timing belt. Considerably more reliable than its predecessor — watch DPF regeneration on short runs. Injectors more durable than on the 1CD.
Problem diesel in the estate
Same 1AD-FTV issues as the saloon — DPF and oil dilution turn long-distance driving into a nerve-wracking exercise.
Engine Weaknesses 7
The 1AD-FTV 2.0 D-4D is known for frequent head gasket failures. Despite Toyota recall campaigns for piston replacement, the oil loss problem persisted in many cases.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, bubbling in the expansion tank, white smoke from the exhaust, milky-coloured engine oil
Progressive oil consumption is a recognised problem on the 1AD-FTV. Toyota carried out piston replacement recalls, but the oil consumption issue often did not disappear completely.
Symptoms: Oil level drops rapidly between changes, oil warning light illuminates; blue smoke from a warm engine is possible
Engine damage on the T25 2.0 D-4D caused by cooling system failure has been documented in toyota-forum.de. When the engine overheats, the remaining coolant escapes and the engine loses its thermal protection.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature gauge spikes suddenly, coolant loss, steam from the engine bay
The copper washers under the piezo injectors should be replaced every 60,000 km. If neglected they can burn through and allow hot combustion gas to escape.
Symptoms: Ticking noise from the engine area, rough running, power loss
The EGR valve on the 1AD-FTV tends to heavy soot fouling, especially with short-trip use. From around 100,000 km a clean or replacement is often necessary.
Symptoms: Hesitation, power loss, increased consumption, check engine light (P2002, P0401), engine limp mode.
The DPF on the 1AD-FTV clogs with frequent short-trip use because regeneration temperature is never reached. Fault code P2002 is typical. A motorway run is often sufficient for regeneration.
Symptoms: DPF warning symbol, increased fuel consumption, power loss, vehicle enters limp mode.
The VGT turbo on the 1AD-FTV has a known actuator issue. A case documented in avensis-forum.de describes a turbo failing just after warranty expiry, with Toyota refusing to cover the repair costs.
Symptoms: Power loss, limp mode, black or white smoke, whistling noise from turbo area
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
Underbody protection on the T250 is only moderately applied. Rust pockets form at welded joints, subframes and sills.
The evaporator behind the dashboard corrodes and loses refrigerant. Repair is labour-intensive due to the need to remove the dashboard.
The input shaft bearing in the manual gearbox wears and causes noise at idle.
Driveshaft gaiters split and steering gear covers develop leaks. Track rod ends can come loose if incorrectly fitted.
Dashboard illumination fails, radio display shows errors or goes blank. Tail lights can become unsealed.
The rear brake discs warp from approximately 60,000 km, especially on estate variants with frequent loading.
Play in the steering column universal joint produces a knocking noise during steering inputs, particularly on uneven surfaces.
The hydraulic power steering on the T250 develops squealing or groaning noises with age, traceable to the seal ring around the steering spindle or worn steering components. Temporarily eased with lubricant.
The T250's boot lid lock has no manual emergency release. If the electric lock or remote control fails, the boot stays locked. The electric lock system is susceptible to control unit faults.
The driver's seat heating on the T250 can fail at higher mileage while the indicator light continues to show it as active. Defective heating mats or broken wiring in the movable seat are the usual cause.
