Tesla Long Range AWD
Dual motor, all-wheel drive. NMC battery retains ~85% capacity after 200,000 miles per Tesla fleet data. Rear induction motor on 2018-2020 builds is the weaker link — bearing failures from 60k miles. Post-2020 switched to dual permanent magnet, substantially improved. Drive unit warranty: 8 years / 120,000 miles. 12V drain issue affects 2017-2021 primarily — Tesla switched to lithium-ion 12V late 2021.
The long-distance cruiser — zero compromise
350 miles, dual motor, 4.2s to sixty. On winter tires the traction control splits torque with surgical precision. Highway cruising is serene, Autopilot takes the edge off fatigue. Regen braking becomes addictive. The minimalist cockpit started a trend that BMW, Mercedes and VW blindly copied — abandoning their timeless, tactile interiors for touchscreen deserts. The irony: those brands are now backpedaling to physical buttons while Tesla doubles down.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Same 12V drain affecting 2017-2021 lead-acid cars. Car becomes completely inoperable. Fixed late 2021 with lithium-ion 12V.
Symptoms: Car dead, unable to unlock or charge
Affects 2018-2020 Long Range AWD with rear induction motor. Coolant exposure corrodes bearings inside drive unit. Post-2020 switched to dual permanent magnet — problem eliminated. Drive unit replacement $6,000-10,000 at Tesla.
Symptoms: Loud whirring/grinding from rear, increasing vibration, eventual loss of rear drive power
Same bearing whine as all Model 3 variants. Dual-motor cars may develop it on either unit. Independent shops: $400 bearing replacement. Tesla: $6,000-10,000 full unit. 8-year/120,000-mile warranty.
Symptoms: High-pitched whining from front or rear motor, louder at highway speed
Same charge port door motor failure as all Model 3 variants. Actuator motor dies, port won't open or close. Updated Tesla part: $360. Third-party: $57 but old design. 10-minute mobile service repair.
Symptoms: Charge port door unresponsive, stuck open or closed
Latch mechanism fails to release charging cable. Same issue across all Model 3 variants. Parts: $128 for latch actuator plus emergency release cable.
Symptoms: Charging cable locked, unable to disconnect
NMC pack loses ~10% capacity in the first 60-80k miles, then slows significantly. Fleet average: 85% at 200,000 miles. Charging to 90% daily and avoiding Supercharging above 80% optimizes longevity. Calendar aging ~5% in year one.
Symptoms: Gradually decreasing maximum displayed range, reduced capacity on health check
Vehicle Weaknesses 20
Affects builds before May 21, 2019. Water accumulates inside rear bumper fascia when driving through puddles. Weight of trapped water tears the bumper off. Tesla acknowledged the defect October 2020, covers under warranty. Design revised May 2019.
NHTSA Recall 23V-235. 422 vehicles built Jan 2018 – Mar 2019. Fasteners attaching front lateral link to sub-frame may loosen from improper torque. If separated, wheel alignment shifts. Tesla inspects and re-torques.
Affects 2021-2023 vision-only models (radar removed May 2021). NHTSA investigation PE22-002: 416,000 Model 3/Y, 354 complaints. Car brakes unexpectedly at highway speed on Autopilot. Software updates reduced but didn't eliminate the problem.
Compressor fails from refrigerant leak draining lubricant oil. Once dry, compressor burns out internally, sending debris through the system. Replacement requires full AC system flush to prevent repeat failure. Tesla quotes $1,200-3,400 depending on debris contamination. Aftermarket compressor (108819800L) available for ~$400 parts only. Affects 2018-2021 builds most frequently.
NHTSA recall affecting ~3,000 Model 3 (2019-2021) and Model Y (2020-2021). Fasteners connecting lateral links to the rear subframe loosen from insufficient torque at the factory. If bolts separate, wheel alignment shifts causing instability. Tesla identified 25 warranty claims. Remedy: free re-torque at Tesla service. Audible clunking before complete separation gives advance warning.
Flush handles freeze shut in winter. Internal spring and micro-switches fail mechanically over time. Tesla's fix: forcefully press to break ice. Preventive silicone lubricant recommended. Handle replacement $250-380 at Tesla service.
Cracks appear without impact, originating from edge. Installation stress from missing weld on mounting bracket puts glass under tension. Stress cracks from edge covered under warranty. Replacement $900-2,000 due to embedded sensors/cameras.
Affects vision-only cars (2021+, no radar). Windshield-mounted forward cameras fog from inside due to condensation or off-gassing from dashboard plastics. No built-in defogging for camera compartment — a design oversight. Renders FSD and Autopilot completely inoperable. Pre-conditioning cabin helps. Tesla service can clean with precision wipes but issue recurs.
Regenerative braking handles 90%+ of stopping, so friction brakes rarely engage. In salt-belt regions, calipers, guide pins, and hardware seize from corrosion and road grime. Tesla recommends cleaning and lubricating calipers annually or every 20,000 km on salted roads. Preventive service: $150-250. Neglected calipers may need complete replacement: $500-1,000 per axle. Firmly applying brakes weekly prevents buildup.
Affects 2017-2020 Fremont builds (VIN: 5YJ) primarily. Gaps far exceeding industry norms, documented by Munro & Associates. Tesla claimed 40% improvement by April 2018. Shanghai builds (VIN: LRW) from 2021 show significantly better fit. Cosmetic, no safety impact.
Independent Finnish inspection measured 71-74 microns on door panels — industry standard is 110-150. The paint is soft and chips easily to bare metal. PPF recommended for front end. Later production marginally better but Tesla paint remains thinner than any competitor.
Affects 2017-2020 builds. Trunk lid seal misalignment and unwelded seams allow water in after rain. Tesla added drain holes to 2021 weather strips. Frunk seal adhesion also fails. Service can adjust trunk alignment.
Water corrodes front upper control arm ball joints, causing creaking on low-speed steering. Tesla added urethane sealant on newer production. Aftermarket Meyle HD arms: $362 both sides. DIY greasing $30 temporarily resolves it.
Yellow band appears around edges of the 15-inch touchscreen. Caused by UV and heat degrading the adhesive bonding the glass to the LCD. Tesla developed a UV light treatment that takes ~4 hours, offered free under warranty. Treatment may not be permanent — yellowing can return. Screen otherwise fully functional. Replacement $1,000-1,500 if treatment fails.
Condensation from the evaporator coils drips onto the cabin air filter, promoting mold and bacterial growth. The cooling system that manages both battery and cabin generates excessive moisture. Running the fan at high speed creates negative pressure that worsens the problem. Fix: replace cabin filters ($17 each) and run blower without AC for an hour after drives to dry the evaporator. Tesla added improved filter design on later production.
Moisture builds up inside B-pillar camera housings, obscuring the lens. Disables Autopilot features including Auto Lane Change, Blind Spot Detection, and Lane Departure Warning until cleared. Tesla issued a TSB: removing gore patches from B-pillar appliques improves airflow. Preconditioning cabin with heat and defroster clears faster. Not a permanent hardware failure but recurring in humid/cold climates.
Front seat heaters fail intermittently. Most common cause: the wiring harness connector under the seat loosens from repeated seat adjustment. Sliding the seat forward and reconnecting the plug often resolves it. If the heating element itself failed, Tesla replaces the entire seat cushion pad. Connector fix: free DIY. Element replacement: $300-500 at service.
Left or right scroll wheel on steering wheel stops responding to clicks or scrolling. Controls volume, Autopilot speed, and voice commands. Caused by failing scroll wheel encoder or clock spring wiring. Software reboot sometimes helps temporarily. Hardware replacement: $100-400 at Tesla service. Affects all Model 3 years but more common after 80,000+ km of daily use.
Frunk won't latch shut or won't release to open. Latch mechanism and striker misalign, especially on early Fremont builds with wider body tolerances. Rubber seal warping compounds the problem. Actuator wiring can also corrode. Lubrication and striker adjustment usually resolves it. If actuator failed: $200-300 replacement. Service appointment often needed as frunk can be completely stuck.
Gas-filled trunk struts lose nitrogen pressure over 3-5 years. Trunk lid no longer opens fully, droops down, or falls on your head. Tesla lists this as a DIY repair — two small screws per strut. OEM replacement $40-60/pair. Aftermarket power struts that fully open the trunk: $80-120. Takes 15 minutes.
