Subaru WRX
Turbo boxer with 2.5L β the WRX engine of the GR/GV era. Same ringland vulnerability as the EJ257 (cast iron pistons with thin ringlands), but slightly less boost from the factory. Oil pickup tube crack, rod bearing failure, and timing belt are the three big concerns. Class action for 2012-2017 models extended warranty to 8 years/100k miles.
WRX Hatchback β the holy grail of the Subaru scene
Wide-body look, turbo boxer, AWD, hatchback: the GR hatch is the car the community never forgot. Discontinued after 2014 without replacement β used prices climbing. Budget for firewall crack repair on hard-driven examples (~$1,200). The combination of practicality and rally looks doesn't exist in any other car of this era.
Engine Weaknesses 5
Cast iron pistons with thin ringlands crack under detonation (knock). Causes: poor fuel quality, bad tuning, high exhaust gas temperatures. The EJ clichΓ© alongside the head gasket.
Symptoms: Misfires at idle after high-load driving, increasing oil consumption, blue smoke
Class action for 2012-2017 WRX/STI: extended warranty to 8 years/100k miles. Oil starvation from boxer sloshing or neglected oil level as primary cause.
Symptoms: Knocking noise, oil pressure warning, metal particles in oil
Identical problem to EJ205: brazed joint cracks from vibration. No recall despite known issue since 1996.
Symptoms: Sudden oil pressure drop, engine noise, oil pressure warning light
Timing belt replacement every 105k miles mandatory. Same interference risk as all EJ engines.
Despite MLS gasket from the factory, the head gasket can fail under overheating or neglected maintenance. Less systematic than the EJ253 NA, but not immune.
Symptoms: Overheating under load, coolant loss, white smoke
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Subaru recall WQK-47 (2014): Brake lines can corrode through from salt water β over 660,000 vehicles including 2008-2014 WRX affected. Free inspection and repair at dealer.
Rear wheel houses rust from inside β design weakness at inner/outer panel transition. In US salt-belt states a serious issue from about 10-12 years onward.
Same weakness as the GD: strut mount bearing wears out from about 70,000 km. TSB 05-61-16 addresses this on the GR platform.
Rear wheel bearings wear with increasing mileage. With the WRX's typical spirited use, sometimes earlier than expected.
Door panel and dashboard clips loosen over time. TSB exists for rear parcel shelf and third brake light. Cold temperatures significantly worsen the noises.
