Subaru WRX

EJ205 2.0L Turbo 227 hp Manual All-wheel drive Wagon 2002โ€“2005
โ€“ Be Careful
Engine EJ205 โ€“ Be Careful 13,300โ€“27,100 $

Turbo boxer with AVCS, 2.0L โ€” the gateway engine of WRX culture. No ringland issues like the 2.5, but rod bearing risk when oil level is neglected. Oil pickup tube (brazed, not welded) is the hidden time bomb in all EJ engines โ€” Subaru has refused a recall since 1996. Timing belt every 105k miles mandatory, interference engine. With a K04 swap and Stage 2, a completely different car: 300+ hp for cheap.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Bugeye/Blobeye wagon โ€” the practical entry point

Same EJ205 turbo, more cargo space. The WRX wagon GD is the hidden gem for people wanting rally DNA but occasionally hauling furniture. Rarer than the sedan, appreciated in the community.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Rod Bearing Failure

Oil starvation from neglected oil level or oil sloshing in corners (boxer design) causes bearing failure. EJ205 less prone than EJ255/257, but not immune.

Symptoms: Knocking noise from engine block, oil pressure warning light, metal shavings in oil

3,500โ€“6,000 $ from 160,000 km
!! Timing Belt โ€” Interference Engine

Timing belt replacement every 105k miles mandatory. Interference engine: belt failure causes piston-to-valve contact โ€” immediate engine destruction.

700โ€“1,200 $ from 170,000 km
!! Oil Pickup Tube Crack โ€” Brazed Joint

The brazed (not welded) oil pickup tube joint cracks from vibration. No oil pressure, no engine lubrication โ€” total loss if not caught in time. Subaru never issued a recall.

Symptoms: Sudden oil pressure drop, oil pressure warning light, engine noise under load

3,000โ€“6,000 $ from 130,000 km
!! Turbo Failure โ€” Oil Starvation via Banjo Bolt

Banjo bolt on the turbo oil feed line contains a fine mesh filter. When the main oil filter enters bypass mode, this screen can restrict oil flow to the turbo bearings โ€” leading to dry running and turbine shaft failure.

Symptoms: Blue smoke, power loss, whining or grinding from turbo, oil smell

1,500โ€“2,500 $ from 120,000 km
!! Head Gasket โ€” Internal Leak

DOHC EJ205 tends toward internal coolant leaks (coolant into combustion chamber). Overheating on the highway with cooling in city traffic is the classic failure pattern.

Symptoms: Overheating under load, bubbles in coolant reservoir, white smoke from exhaust

2,500โ€“4,000 $ from 130,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Rust Front subframe rusts through

Known recall issue (2011): Front subframe and lower control arm brackets corrode severely in salt-belt states โ€” metal can be punched through. Safety-critical failure mode.

800โ€“3,000 $ from 120,000 km
!! Brakes Brake line corrosion (Recall WQK-47)

Subaru recall WQK-47: Brake lines corrode due to gap in fuel tank protector โ€” salt water splashes directly onto steel lines. Over 660,000 vehicles affected.

400โ€“1,200 $ from 100,000 km
!! Rust Rear wheel arch rust

Rear wheel houses rust from the inside out โ€” the weld seam between inner and outer panel traps moisture. In salt-belt regions visible from about 10 years onward.

500โ€“2,000 $ from 100,000 km
! Suspension Strut mount bearing worn

Strut mount bearing wears out from about 80,000 km โ€” often insufficiently greased from factory. Clunking when turning at low speed is the classic symptom. TSB 05-61-16 addresses this.

200โ€“600 $ from 80,000 km
! Suspension Rear wheel bearing rumble

Rear wheel bearings are pressed components on the GD generation. More prone to wear with high mileage or spirited driving than on normal vehicles.

200โ€“450 $ from 100,000 km
i Interior Dashboard rattles

Typical Subaru issue on the GD generation: plastic clips on door panels and dashboard loosen with age. Cold temperatures make the noises worse.

0โ€“150 $ from 50,000 km
