Subaru Crosstrek
Subaru's volume boxer: 2.5L NA in Legacy, Outback, Forester. Oil consumption class action for 2011-2014 models — piston rings didn't seat properly. Cam carrier seal leaks from ~60k miles (labor-intensive). Thermo control valve on 2019-2022 models: plastic housing fails under heat — Subaru extended warranty to 15 years. Improved from 2023.
Crosstrek 2.5 — more torque, same composure
182 hp is plenty for real-world driving. The CVT feels vague under kickdown but works well at a relaxed pace on the highway.
Engine Weaknesses 1
Direct-injected FB25D variant (from 2020) has the same carbon buildup issue as all DI engines. Budget for walnut blasting.
Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Manufacturing defect during heat treatment: the outer race of the front driveshaft develops cracks and can fracture. A broken driveshaft causes loss of drive power or vehicle rollaway when parked without the brake applied. NHTSA campaign 23V754000. Dealers inspect and replace both driveshafts free of charge.
Instrument panel wiring harness runs too close to the steering beam bracket — insulation wears through and can cause a short circuit. In the worst case, drive power is lost while driving. NHTSA campaign 23V551000 affects 35,357 vehicles. Dealers add a clamp or replace the harness free of charge.
Driver assist system misidentifies roadside objects (mailboxes, reflective signs, bridge supports) as collision threats and applies hard braking on a clear road. Particularly dangerous with close following traffic. Dealer calibration helps temporarily but the problem can recur.
Lineartronic CVT shudders at low speeds or during gentle acceleration from a stop. Subaru extended the CVT warranty to 10 years / 100,000 miles after nearly 1,500 documented complaints. Full replacement runs $7,000–$8,000.
Touchscreen becomes unresponsive or spontaneously reboots — affects navigation, backup camera, and wireless charging. Some owners suspect a link to the wiring harness recall (23V551000). Dealer software updates do not provide a permanent fix.
