Skoda Scala
Compact CNG three-cylinder for Scala and Kamiq. The system operates at 200 bar tank pressure with a two-stage pressure regulator. Very reliable in normal operation; the CNG peripherals are long-lived but require increased attention from around 200,000 km.
CNG base — frugal and workable
66 kW CNG in the Scala: cheap at the pump, adequate for daily use. No character.
Engine Weaknesses 3
The two-stage gas pressure regulator reduces tank pressure from 200 bar to approx. 10 bar. A defect causes insufficient gas pressure, rough running or emergency switch to petrol. Repair requires a CNG-specialist workshop.
Symptoms: Vehicle switches automatically to petrol mode, power loss in gas mode, gas pressure warning light
CNG high-pressure tanks and valves are subject to mandatory repeat inspection every 4 years. If the inspection is missed, the operating permit for gas mode expires.
Symptoms: No symptoms — administrative risk if neglected
After 150,000–200,000 km, gas injectors can leak or stick. Symptoms are rough idle in gas mode and elevated CNG consumption from leakage losses.
Symptoms: Rough idle in gas mode, elevated consumption, occasional switch to petrol mode
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Vehicles from model years 2019–2020 were recalled due to faulty eCall software. In an emergency the system could have failed to trigger.
The MIB3-based Bolero infotainment freezes, restarts spontaneously or loses all station presets. The eCall emergency function can also fail simultaneously.
Several Scala owners report pronounced suspension impacts on poor roads, manifesting as hopping and wallowing. Interior trim rattles and creaks loudly at the same time.
The backrest adjustment on the driver and passenger seat gives way and the backrest slowly reclines during driving. Skoda has fitted new seat frames in several cases.
The door seals do not close optimally, causing wind noise from approximately 80 km/h. The B-pillar seal is most frequently affected.
The rear brake discs show heavy surface rust after a short standstill period, which only disappears after several brake applications. Typical for lightly loaded rear axle brakes.
Reports & Tests
The Scala shows noticeably high fault rates at its first MOT inspection. Brake disc wear is drastically above the class average and is the defining weakness of the model.
