Robust distributor injection pump diesel with long service life when well maintained. The mechanical injection pump is inherently more maintenance-intensive than common-rail but overall reliable. Strictly observe timing belt replacement intervals.
Economy diesel with no temperament
66 kW naturally aspirated diesel — economical and durable, but completely emotionless. A pure workhorse for high-mileage drivers.
Engine Weaknesses 3
The ALH has different timing belt intervals depending on build year (pre-2001: 90,000 km; from 2002: 120,000 km). If the belt snaps, total engine failure from valve contact is guaranteed.
Symptoms: Upon belt failure: engine stops dead, severe engine noise. Usually no warning beforehand — purely a maintenance issue.
The distributor injection pump on the ALH tends to develop leaks in the high-pressure section. Fuel escapes at the pump body and is often visible as a moist, oily residue.
Symptoms: Fuel smell in engine bay, visible wet patches on pump body, difficult cold start, uneven power delivery
On the ALH, the EGR valve clogs with soot deposits, especially in short-trip operation. The result is noticeable power loss in the lower rev range and fault codes in the ECU.
Symptoms: Power loss especially below 2,000 rpm, EGR fault code stored, occasional juddering under acceleration
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
The exposed steel brake lines on the rear axle of the Octavia 1U (non-AWD versions) corrode heavily. Advanced corrosion risks leakage and complete failure of the rear brakes.
The tailgate (particularly at the glass-to-metal transition) and the sills are classic rust spots on the Octavia 1U. Leaf and dirt accumulation between the wheel arch and sill creates damp pockets that rust from the inside out.
The front brake discs of the Octavia 1U are prone to warping, particularly when stopping immediately after hard braking. Many owners report multiple replacements within normal service intervals.
The door control module in the driver's door corrodes from moisture ingress — connectors turn green, pins oxidise. The result is failing central locking, non-functional window regulators and sporadic fault messages.
Front and rear axle springs break on the Octavia 1U through corrosion, typically from approximately 130,000 km. The problem is known on the VAG platform. Springs rust from the inside until they break — often without much warning.
The steering rack develops perceptible play around the centre position from approximately 120,000 km. The steering gaiters also become porous, allowing grease to escape and moisture to enter.
The plastic thermostat housing becomes brittle from approximately 100,000 km and begins to leak at the mating face. Coolant loss can lead to overheating in the worst case.
Particularly early model years of the Octavia 1U (1996–2000) show contact problems in the instrument cluster: speedo drops out, odometer stops running, warning lights show false readings.
The headlining detaches from its backing material from approximately 15 years, particularly on vehicles regularly exposed to high temperatures. Typically starts at the rear window.
