Skoda Fabia
Further-developed three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine for the Fabia IV generation (EA211 EVO 1). Slightly more economical than the predecessor DLBA; same platform weaknesses apply. Well suited for city drivers and light cross-country use; no turbo means low maintenance overhead.
80 hp — still not enough
59 kW in the Fabia PJ: slightly better than the 65 hp engine, but still too weak for relaxed overtaking.
Engine Weaknesses 3
As with the DLBA, the four camshaft adjuster mounting bolts can come loose. Contact with the timing belt sprocket risks timing belt failure and engine damage. Revised variant with part number suffix M in production since 2015.
Symptoms: Sudden stall, metallic bang, engine will not restart
KBA recall 013100: manufacturing deviation on the front passenger airbag in Fabia IV 2021–2022. Airbag can tear or fail to deploy correctly on activation. Approximately 11,000 vehicles affected in Germany.
On MPI engines of the EA211 family, isolated leaking head gaskets are documented, in some cases after very low mileage. Recognisable by damp patches at the cylinder head joint and slight coolant loss.
Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible leak, slight oil smell after a long drive
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
A production deviation can cause the passenger airbag to tear or fail to deploy correctly when triggered. KBA number 013100, Skoda code 69EU. Approximately 49,000 vehicles affected worldwide.
The MIB3 infotainment system freezes, restarts spontaneously or shows a black screen. Software updates can temporarily resolve the problem but sometimes introduce new issues.
The rear axle (twist-beam) produces a thumping noise over bumps. The axle mounting bushings or loose shock absorber fixings are often the cause.
Seat covers show early creasing and distortion, particularly on the front seats. The problem is cosmetic and is only covered by the factory warranty in the early stages.
Wind noise at the A-pillar at motorway speed. The door seal does not make optimal contact with the A-pillar trim in the upper area.
Reports & Tests
The current Fabia performs above average at the MOT inspection. Only slightly elevated fault rates for headlight alignment and central locking are notable.
