Skoda Fabia RS

ASZ 1.9L TDI 130 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2003–2007 Custom Search
– Be Careful
Engine ASZ – Be Careful 4,330–11,770 $

Strongest 1.9 TDI variant at 96 kW/130 hp with unit injector technology. Considered more robust than the weaker ATD but subject to the same PD-specific weaknesses. The turbocharger (GT1749VA) is designed for higher loads and holds up well with correct oil maintenance.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Fabia RS — 130 hp diesel legend

96 kW and 310 Nm in a 1,100 kg Fabia RS: taut suspension, 204 km/h top speed. The only diesel hot-hatch of its era — cult status.

Engine Weaknesses 3

!! GT1749VA turbocharger worn

The variable-geometry turbocharger (GT1749VA) on the ASZ tends toward shaft play and oil blow-by at higher mileages. The defect is often confused with an injection pump problem.

Symptoms: Whistling or rattling from the turbocharger area, oil trail in the exhaust pipe, power loss with smoke

660–1,540 $ from 200,000 km
!! Unit injectors failed

The four unit injectors are high-pressure components that wear prematurely when contaminated or incorrect engine oil is used. Complete failure of all four units is possible.

Symptoms: Heavy juddering and rough running, white smoke, fuel smell, engine running as though on 3 cylinders

1,320–3,080 $ from 160,000 km
!! Camshaft wear (unit injector)

Identical issue to the ATD: wear on camshaft and bucket tappets due to high valvetrain stress from the unit injector technology. VAG bulletin TPI 2009814/12 confirms the problem.

Symptoms: Ticking and clattering from the valve cover area, worse noise on cold start, declining engine power

990–2,200 $ from 180,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Electronics Engine wiring harness damaged by water ingress 1999–2004

On vehicles before the facelift the engine wiring harness lies in a recess where rainwater collects. The ingressing water corrodes the harness over years, causing a wide variety of electrical failures.

330–1,650 $ from 100,000 km
!! Electronics Corroded charging cable / earth fault

The thin blue charging regulation cable between the alternator and voltage regulator, as well as earth connections on the engine block, corrode over the years. The result is irregular charging, battery failures and the engine cutting out sporadically.

60–440 $ from 120,000 km
!! Steering Steering rack worn

The steering rack develops noticeable play from approximately 100,000 km. The rack wears and leads to imprecise steering, particularly around the straight-ahead position.

330–880 $ from 100,000 km
!! HVAC Heater matrix leaking

The heater matrix can start leaking from approximately 120,000 km. Coolant enters the interior and fogs the windscreen.

330–770 $ from 120,000 km
! Electronics Central locking microswitch defective

The microswitches in the Fabia 6Y door locks frequently fail, so the central locking can only be operated with the key. Particularly affected are higher-mileage examples over 100,000 km.

60–220 $ from 100,000 km
! Suspension Anti-roll bar bushings worn

The rubber mounts of the front anti-roll bar wear prematurely on the Fabia 6Y. The control arm bushings also show typical VAG platform wear at higher mileages.

110–390 $ from 120,000 km
! Electronics Electric window regulators defective

The electric window regulators fail regularly on the Fabia 6Y — both the drive motor and the mechanism. Frequent cause is moisture ingress through the door seals into the door cavity.

90–330 $ from 100,000 km
! Body Leaking door seals / water ingress

The door seals of the Fabia 6Y age and shrink, causing water ingress into the doors and interior. Damp door interiors accelerate failure of the window regulators and door control modules.

70–280 $ from 80,000 km
