Skoda Fabia
1.4L three-cylinder unit injector engine, 59 kW. Robust diesel, but typical PD weaknesses: camshaft wear and EGR coking at high mileages. Use only VW-approved 505.01 oil.
Too little diesel for the estate
The 1.4 TDI with 70 hp in the estate: frugal, but every incline becomes an adventure.
Engine Weaknesses 3
On PD-TDI engines, camshaft bearings and hydraulic tappets wear from mechanical stress caused by the unit injector assemblies. Damage typically appears from 180,000–220,000 km.
Symptoms: Clattering from the valvetrain, especially on cold start. Power loss, rough engine running.
The 1.4 TDI BNM is an interference engine — a snapped timing belt will definitely bend valves. Strictly observe the replacement interval of 120,000 km (until April 2006) or 150,000 km (from May 2006).
Symptoms: Sudden engine stop, loud banging from engine bay. Engine will not restart.
The EGR valve clogs with soot deposits from diesel operation. The connecting hose between EGR and throttle body is particularly affected. More pronounced in short-trip driving.
Symptoms: Power loss, rough idle, EGR valve fault message, elevated fuel consumption.
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Certain build years of the Fabia 5J are affected by the Takata airbag recall. The gas generator in the driver's airbag can release metal fragments on deployment.
Moisture enters the tailgate through the licence plate lights and the handle recess. Corrosion spreads under the paint and causes blistering.
Suspension springs fracture from corrosion and material fatigue. Most common at the front axle in the lower coil area.
Ignition coils on petrol engines fail from overheating and insulation faults. Usually individual cylinders affected; all four coils should be replaced together.
Stone chips and road salt cause corrosion on the rear wheel arches. Without treatment, rust spreads under the paint.
The front brake discs wear prematurely in city driving. Disc run-out and vibrations appear earlier than on comparable vehicles.
The electric steering column develops creaking or clicking when turning, especially at low temperatures. The cause is wear in the steering column bearing.
The cabin blower motor starts squeaking or whining from around 80,000 km, especially on lower settings. Dry bearings or debris accumulation are common causes.
Reports & Tests
Older Fabia model years show notable weaknesses at the MOT inspection in brakes and lighting. Oil leaks and corroded exhaust systems increase noticeably with vehicle age.
