Tarraco 190 TDI — best SUV diesel
With 147 kW from the 2.0 TDI the Tarraco KN in its most powerful diesel version is a comfortable and sovereign touring SUV. Strong acceleration, a refined diesel unit, and reserves for every situation — for a large SUV a genuine recommendation.
Engine Weaknesses 10
EGR cooler develops hairline cracks — coolant enters the exhaust tract. Silent coolant loss without visible leaks is the main symptom. Hydro-lock risk means total engine failure is possible.
Symptoms: Creeping coolant consumption, white smoke, sweet exhaust smell inside the cabin, engine warning light with fault code P200200.
Wet-running timing belt runs in an oil bath. The water pump can fail before the official replacement interval, contaminating the belt. Recommendation: early combined replacement.
Symptoms: Whistling from the engine bay, sudden overheating, coolant loss, belt residues visible in oil on oil change.
The DTUA (EA288 evo, 147 kW) in the Tarraco uses the complex SCR twin-dosing system with two AdBlue injectors. Malfunctions at the dosing valves, sensors, or SCR catalysts carry the risk of expensive repairs.
Symptoms: AdBlue system warning, elevated NOx emissions, engine warning light, SCR system fault codes
The EA288 evo DTUA uses a wet timing belt as its oil drive. Using the wrong oil specification or very long change intervals can cause the belt to fray and contaminate the oil system.
Symptoms: Metal particles in oil, turbocharger noises, oil pressure warning at very high mileage
The EA288 evo requires motorway trips for complete DPF regeneration. Frequent incomplete regenerations lead to oversaturation. Secondary turbocharger damage through back pressure is possible.
Symptoms: 'Particulate filter full' warning indicator, power throttling, increased consumption. Engine runs roughly for a short time after idling phase.
The EA288 evo turbocharger is under greater stress at 190 hp. Oil coking after hot shutdown accelerates bearing wear. The VTG mechanism can seize due to soot, causing a boost pressure drop.
Symptoms: Whistling or whining on acceleration, power loss, oil in air filter housing or intercooler, fault code P0299.
The EGR valve wears through soot deposits and progressively sticks. The result is idle fluctuations, rough running, and engine warning light. Cleaning or replacement required; check the EGR cooler for cracks at the same time.

With predominantly short-trip driving, the DPF cannot complete forced regeneration. Soot accumulation causes overpressure, power loss, and increased turbocharger stress. Professional cleaning or replacement required.

Exhaust aftertreatment sensors fail sporadically. The NOx sensor and DPF differential pressure sensor are frequently affected. Results in limp mode or incorrect DPF regeneration.
Symptoms: Engine warning light without clear mechanical cause, incorrect fuel consumption display, limp mode, AdBlue warning despite full tank.

Vehicle Weaknesses 9
Two recalls: fractured seat bracket (303 vehicles, 2019) and TDI models with starting problems due to a defective engine control unit (2019).
Incorrectly fitted engine covers can melt on contact with hot engine components and cause a fire. Affected: production July 2020 to March 2022.
On DSG models from 2020–2021 the pedal plate can deform or detach. 1,780 vehicles affected in Germany.
The emergency braking assistant (Front Assist) in the Tarraco occasionally brakes hard in response to non-existent obstacles.
The air conditioning stops without warning and without an error message. Seat was in some cases unable to resolve the issue for 20 months.
On 2023 model year vehicles the serial number of the left rear door must be checked and replaced if necessary.
