Competent 1.6 TDI in the Leon

The 1.6 TDI with 96 kW in the Leon 5F is a balanced choice for high-mileage drivers. The engine runs refinedly and the fuel consumption impresses. A sensible choice for long-distance commuters — but not for drivers with sporting ambitions, who should look at the 2.0 TDI instead.

Engine Weaknesses 9

!! Wet timing belt in oil bath

The 1.0 TSI EA211 uses an oil-bath timing belt. With neglected oil changes belt wear accelerates considerably. Belt replacement by 90,000 km or 6 years at the latest.

Symptoms: Rattling in the engine bay, engine warning, rough idle

440–990 $ from 90,000 km
!! Petrol particulate filter (GPF) clogging

Models with GPF tend to filter blockage with predominantly short-trip use. The EGR valve can also soot up and cause power loss.

Symptoms: Engine warning, power reduction, elevated fuel consumption

550–2,200 $ from 80,000 km
!! Turbocharger leaking

Individual vehicles show turbocharger leaks or failures leading to power loss and blue smoke. Typical with neglected maintenance or frequent hot shut-downs.

Symptoms: Blue smoke on acceleration, whistling from the engine bay, power loss under load

880–2,200 $ from 120,000 km
! Oil consumption from piston rings

The 1.0 TSI 3-cylinder can develop oil consumption at higher mileages from coking piston rings. Frequent short trips promote the problem.

Symptoms: Elevated oil consumption >0.5 litres/1,000 km, bluish exhaust smoke

660–2,200 $ from 100,000 km
! Software recall 1.5 TSI emissions / torque drop

Vehicles with manual gearbox (production May–June 2019) were recalled: at below 800 rpm with high-load consumers active, unexpected torque loss occurs.

Symptoms: No direct driving symptoms in normal operation; torque loss only occurs in a specific load combination

! Juddering in first gear / cold start

Many owners report pronounced juddering in first gear and at very low speeds, especially when cold. The cause is the combination of Miller cycle, GPF back pressure and prolonged shifting moments.

Symptoms: Pronounced juddering at low speeds, especially in first gear and with a cold engine; improves after warm-up

0–220 $ from 10,000 km
! ACT cylinder deactivation: vibrations and juddering

Perceptible vibrations and slight juddering occur when switching between 2- and 4-cylinder operation, especially on cold start and at low load. VW has issued multiple software updates.

Symptoms: Humming and perceptible juddering when switching in/out of 2-cylinder mode. Cold engine: hesitation on pull-away, rpm fluctuations until coolant temperature reaches 70°C.

! Oil consumption from crankcase ventilation

The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) can malfunction in direct-injection TSI engines from deposits or wear. Crankcase overpressure pushes oil past the piston rings.

Symptoms: Rising oil consumption without external leak. Crankcase overpressure when opening the filler cap with the engine running. Blue exhaust under load.

90–330 $ from 80,000 km
! Intake valve coking from direct injection

Like all GDI direct-injection engines, the 1.5 TSI does not spray fuel directly at the intake valves. EGR deposits build up there, impairing power and smoothness.

Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss in the mid-rpm range, elevated fuel consumption, cold-start judder.

330–660 $ from 90,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Other Recall: Rear door child locks and airbag 2012–2017

Multiple recalls: child locks on rear doors can deactivate while driving (2015–2016). Airbag modules were also recalled.

0–0 $
!! Other Camshaft adjuster: Loose screws (2014–2015) 2014–2015

On 2014 build-year cars, screws on the camshaft adjuster can come loose and migrate into the engine. The timing belt tears and the engine is destroyed. Manufacturer recall (TPI 2038019/4) — verify completion on any used car.

0–8,800 $
!! HVAC Panoramic roof: Blocked drain channels

Seat installs constrictions in the panoramic roof drain hose for noise damping purposes. These constrictions become blocked and divert water into the interior.

110–660 $ from 60,000 km
!! Cooling Coolant loss: EGR cooler and hoses (TDI)

Gradual coolant loss occurs on 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI Leon 5F models. The usual cause is a defective EGR cooler or a cracked coolant hose.

170–660 $ from 100,000 km
! Suspension Springs and shock absorbers: Premature wear

Springs and shock absorbers on the Leon 5F show above-average wear even at the first roadworthiness inspection. Shock absorbers in particular are frequently flagged.

220–770 $ from 80,000 km
! Electronics Headlights: Micro-cracks in lens cover

The headlights of the Leon 5F are prone to developing micro-cracks in the lens cover. At the roadworthiness inspection a complete headlight replacement can be required.

220–880 $ from 80,000 km
! Electronics LED indicator: BCM configuration error (2016–2019) 2016–2019

A configuration error in the body control module (BCM) prevents detection of failed front LED indicators. Affects cars produced November 2016 to October 2019. Software update at the dealer is free of charge.

0–220 $ from 60,000 km
i Interior Interior: Rattling trim panels and footwell covers

Interior trim panels and footwell covers in the Leon 5F are prone to rattling and squeaking noises. Door trim panels and footwell covers are particularly affected.

0–220 $ from 40,000 km

Reports & Tests

TÜV AUTO BILD TÜV-Report 2024-08
Average

The third Leon generation performs more solidly at the roadworthiness inspection than its predecessor. Even at the first mandatory check coil springs, shock absorbers, and headlights attract attention; micro-cracks in the headlight lenses can necessitate a complete replacement.
