Seat Ibiza 1.9 SDI
Naturally aspirated diesel without turbo at 47 kW (64 hp). The injection pump shows wear at high mileages. Extremely economical but low on power.
Economy-minded with no temperament
The 1.9 SDI drinks almost nothing but can do almost nothing either. City traffic is fine; motorway driving becomes a test of patience.
Engine Weaknesses 3
Recall for ASY Ibiza built March–August 2004: bolts on the tandem fuel pump cover can break due to manufacturing defects, causing diesel leakage.
Symptoms: Fuel leak, diesel smell, possible fire risk from exposed fuel
The distributor injection pump of the SDI can show signs of wear from 200,000 km. Fluctuating idle and poorer starting behaviour are the result.
Symptoms: Rough idle, poor cold-start behaviour, power loss
On the 1.9 SDI ASY, the seal on the injection pump cover becomes porous, allowing diesel to escape. Typical problem after extended periods of standing.
Symptoms: Diesel smell in engine bay, fuel spots under the vehicle, difficult starting after sitting
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
The 1.2L petrol engine in the Ibiza 6L suffers from a stretching timing chain. From around 80,000 km, rattling on cold starts and, in severe cases, a catastrophic engine failure can occur.
The exhaust system rusts through within a few years. Further rust spots: wheel arches, sills, door hinge cups, and bonnet folds. Especially susceptible without proper care.
The rear drum brakes are prone to seizing, especially after prolonged standstill. Brake discs and pads wear faster than usual.
The front axle joints wear early and are typical roadworthiness inspection complaints. Sway bar links and wishbones are also affected.
Electric window regulators fail frequently. Central locking and interior lighting are also known as problematic.
The blend flap actuator of the HVAC system fails, causing incorrect temperature regulation. Repair requires dashboard removal.
The boot rubber seal becomes porous with age and allows water into the boot. Typical age-related problem on cars over 10 years old.
The mass airflow sensor (MAF) in the Ibiza 6L gets contaminated or fails entirely. Result: engine management faults and power loss. Cleaning can extend its life; replacement is inexpensive.
