Seat Exeo ST 1.8 TSI
EA888 Gen1 1.8 TSI with 120 hp in the Exeo on the Audi A4 B7 platform. Oil consumption from piston ring issues and timing chain stretch are known Gen1 weaknesses; replace water pump regularly. Same base as Audi A4 B7.
Estate base with 120 hp
The Exeo ST 1.8 TSI offers Audi A4 comfort at a Seat price. Engine is adequate, but feels a little strained when fully loaded.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The EA888 Gen1 CDAA is considered one of the most problematic VAG engines. Undersized oil scraper rings coke up with deposits, allowing oil to enter the combustion chamber. Oil consumption above 1 l/1,000 km from approx. 60,000–80,000 km is typical.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start or acceleration, falling oil level, oil consumption above 0.5 l/1,000 km
The EA888 Gen1 chain tensioner was originally undersized. The timing chain stretches, chain rattling occurs. Left untreated the chain can jump and cause total engine damage. VW revised the tensioner.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling from the engine bay on cold start, camshaft deviation fault codes, power loss
Undersized oil scraper rings coke up with soot deposits, allowing oil blow-by. From 40,000–70,000 km consumption can rise above 1 litre per 1,000 km. Repair requires engine removal.
Symptoms: Blue smoke from the exhaust, falling oil level, oil consumption above 0.5 l/1,000 km
The timing chain and its tensioner tend to stretch prematurely, which can lead to chain jumping and engine damage. During a piston ring replacement the chain should be replaced preventively.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, engine warning light, in worst case valve contact and engine damage
The EA888 Gen1 CDAA water pump can leak or fail mechanically, causing engine overheating. Problem known from the Leon 1P/Altea era — replace simultaneously with the timing chain during a rebuild.
Symptoms: Rising coolant temperature gauge, coolant loss, steam, red warning lamp
The thermostat housing and the oil cooler connector become porous and start to leak. Coolant loss often goes undetected for a long time. Dealer costs up to €800, independent garage from €190.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating warning, coolant smell in the engine bay, deposits on the thermostat housing
Vehicle Weaknesses 3
The double-wishbone front axle of the Exeo 3R (Audi A4 B7 basis) wears at high mileage and is costly to overhaul.
On the 2.0 TDI engine fuel return lines can develop leaks. Typical symptom is fuel stains under the vehicle.
Premature battery performance loss and false alarms from the anti-theft system are known weaknesses on the Exeo 3R.
