Seat Exeo
118 kW EA888 Gen1 in the Exeo on Audi B7 platform. Oil consumption and timing chain stretch are known EA888 Gen1 weak points. Robust everyday engine with proper maintenance.
Exeo — solid mid-range car
The 1.8 TSI with 118 kW in the Exeo 3R delivers pleasant, relaxed performance. As an Audi A4 derivative the Exeo has a solid technical foundation and good refinement. Not a sports car, but a cultured everyday driver with a good reputation.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The CDHB is the Exeo variant of the EA888 Gen1 1.8 TSI and shares the known piston ring problem. Oil consumption of 0.5–1.5 l/1,000 km from approx. 70,000 km is typical. The Exeo, based on the Audi A4 B7, is equally affected.
Symptoms: Blue smoke, falling oil level, coking of spark plugs from oil combustion
The EA888 Gen1 CDHB in the Seat Exeo suffers from chain stretch from undersized tensioners like all Gen1 variants. Since the Exeo is based on the Audi A4 B7, Audi-specific workshop experience exists for this problem.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start from the engine area, camshaft fault codes, in worst case chain jumping
The EA888 Gen2 shows early timing chain wear from material defects in stamping tools. Tensioner and guide rails are susceptible. A broken chain causes immediate engine damage with valve contact. Preventive replacement from 80,000 km recommended.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, engine stuttering, sudden engine shutdown when chain jumps
The plastic impeller of the water pump can break or the pump can develop a leak. Consequence: overheating up to cylinder head gasket damage. Replacement should be done preventively with the timing chain.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, rising coolant temperature, coolant smell, engine warning light
Direct injection without port injection promotes soot formation on intake valves. Particularly pronounced with frequent short-trip use. Engine cleaner or mechanical valve cleaning (walnut blasting) necessary.
Symptoms: Rough idle, juddering at partial load, measurable power loss, elevated fuel consumption
The valve cover gasket and crankcase ventilation of the EA888 Gen2 develop leaks at higher mileages. Oil loss and elevated oil consumption from a clogged or burst oil separator.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle, smoke from a hot engine, oil smell inside the cabin
Vehicle Weaknesses 3
The double-wishbone front axle of the Exeo 3R (Audi A4 B7 basis) wears at high mileage and is costly to overhaul.
On the 2.0 TDI engine fuel return lines can develop leaks. Typical symptom is fuel stains under the vehicle.
Premature battery performance loss and false alarms from the anti-theft system are known weaknesses on the Exeo 3R.
