Seat Ateca
140 kW EA888 Gen3 with 4Drive in the Ateca (190 hp), only with DSG and all-wheel drive. Water pump and DSG clutch wear are known weak points. Sporty SUV unit with good all-wheel drive.
Ateca FR — sporty compact SUV
With 140 kW from the 2.0 TSI the Ateca KH is a surprisingly sporty vehicle for an SUV. The chassis is firm, the steering direct, and the DSG ensures instantaneous acceleration. Among compact SUVs one of the most dynamic options available.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Rattling on cold start is also documented on the EA888 Gen3 CZPB, commonly in early production years (2015–2017). Revised chain tensioner from 2017.
Symptoms: Brief metallic rattling immediately after cold start, disappears after warm-up
The CZPB in the Ateca 4Drive shares the water pump problem of all EA888 Gen3 engines on the MQB platform. The pump can lose coolant or fail mechanically. Regular coolant level checks aid early detection.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, rising thermostat temperature, coolant smell, engine shutdown on overheating
The DSG gearbox in the Ateca 4Drive shows elevated clutch wear from the SUV weight and typical stop-and-go use. Change gearbox oil every 50,000–60,000 km and check for judder-free pull-away when buying.
Symptoms: Juddering when pulling away, shift hesitation, DSG overheating warning when towing
The Leon Cupra 300 (CZPB) shows elevated oil consumption under full load in sporty driving. Over 300 ml of oil loss documented during multiple full-load runs.
Symptoms: Falling oil level after full-load runs, oil smell from exhaust, in worst case blue smoke clouds
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
The 7-speed DSG (DQ200) in the Ateca shows jerking on pull-away and rough gear changes from as early as 30,000–50,000 km.
On DSG models from 2020–2021 a defective weld joint can cause the pedal plate to deform or detach.
The body control module of 2016–2018 models does not detect an LED indicator failure and does not show rapid blinking.
Defective headlight control units on 2018 models caused glare risk. A recall was initiated.
Blocked drainage valves on the panoramic roof let water into the boot. Up to 6 litres reported in the spare wheel well.
Rust spots have been found on the tailgate of some Ateca examples.
Brake discs show an insufficient contact pattern more frequently than average in TÜV reports. ACC systems place additional load on the rear brakes.
Cables in the hinge area break through constant bending movement. Workshops often replace the entire motor instead of just the cables.
The anti-trap protection trips falsely and prevents the window from closing fully. Dirty guide rails or a misadjusted sensor are the cause.
Door trims and inner door handles cause knocking noises from minimal play. Felt pads or foam buffers as remedy.
Reports & Tests
The Ateca is among the better compact SUVs at the roadworthiness inspection: chassis, steering, and exhaust show few issues. Only brake discs are flagged for insufficient contact pattern more often than average.
